A personal request, based on this subject.

I would very much like to not be astroturfed/brigaded every 18 to 24 hours because I'm licensing my comments.

Usually the first comment is someone asking me why I'm using a license, then the second comment replying to the first comment is someone else chastising my intelligence and my usage of the license and saying I don't know what I'm doing, and then explaining the completely wrong terms why I'm licensing it, and then the first person from the first comment replies with the third comment saying how dumb or silly or funny I am for doing that, rinse / repeat.

(A funny aside, the pattern I described above, the third comment was identical text, with days separating the two occurrences, and then later on someone went back and changed the third comment on the second most recent occurrence to be worded slightly different, after the fact.)

Another one is I get someone who goes on very very long diatribes asserting law and legalities (even though when I ask them if they are a lawyer they never answer, or they say no), using many paragraphed comments to tell me in every way why I'm wrong, but then finishing their diatribe off with how they really don't care about the subject, but are just giving a friendly explanation to me why I'm getting downvoted, when I didn't ask, and when voting wasn't even being discussed.

And finally, the 10-15ish downvotes on every comment I'm making. (The one that really made me laugh was the one where I reply with one word, "Thanks".)

Just leave me the f alone. If you don't like seeing my comments with a license link, feel free to block me.

It's really becoming harassment at this point.

Thank you for reading.

Was that supposed an anti paywall link or something

Nope. Its a Creative Comments license for my comment.

Seems like a broken signature hyperlink to me.

Nope, it works.

Edit: By "it works" I mean the link can be clicked on. If the formatting looks wrong, check to see if the client you are using supports subscript/superscript fonts.

For any particular reason?

I get that question asked frequently, so I’ll just point you to this comment from me, which explains. …

Otherwise, the description of the link is sufficient to get an idea of what its about.

From Mbin, it looks struck through, lol

Its formatted properly, per Lemmy's web page.

Its using subscript/superscript fonts, so you might want to double-check if your client is supporting those fonts properly or not.

Subscript: subscript ~subscript~
Superscript: ^superscript^ ^superscript^

If the above does not display correctly, you need to talk to the devs of the client that you are using. I'm using the Lemmy web client.

Looks like Lemmy has decided to use a flavor of Markdown which is inconsistent from Mbin’s. That’s a shame.

Weirdly enough, different Lemmy Android clients for Lemmy also work differently with the scripts formatting, each having their own quirks. One person though did fix their problem by upgrading their client app to the latest version.

I had thought it was all one single standard, when first started using the formatting. My original intent was just to have a smaller font, as I was at first just using the link format without any subscripting, but people were complaining about that, so I was trying to compromise and make it smaller.

You don’t own your comments to transfer a license in the first place.

Are you a lawyer? You have some citation to back that up?

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

Like I told you before. That’s not a link to the license, the page itself says so!

Thats the canonical version of the license.

The legal version is linked directly from there, as well as here.

My declaring my comments as licensed by CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 means its licensed. Its your responsibility to read the full license to comply, not mine.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

Aha, so you actually read it? Thanks for clarifying.

I have. Both versions. I was just linking to the easy to read version (canonical), but by declaring my comment as licensed means it is covered by CC BY-NC-SA 4.0, and you can get to the legal version from the canonical version.

So you didn’t reach the conclusion that this license is incompatible with posting on Lemmy?

Are you a lawyer? No? Well then be sure to come back here once you get your degree and let us know the final word on this.

I watch his show every week, and though I don't always agree with him, I do appreciate some media trying to have honest and open conversations about things, versus just each side yelling at each other side type of conversations.

Having said that, he seems pretty myopic about the whole Israeli-Palestinian-Hamas thing going on right now. (But then again, there seems to be a concerted effort being pushed on multiple media outlets like CNN as well right now.)

Also sometimes he gets a little bit into a 'yelling at the clouds to get off his lawn' mode.

But overall, he really tries to get honest conversation going between parties on all sides. I enjoy watching the show every week, including the extra part that is on YouTube afterwards.

What I want to know is why when I'm talking to my wife in the car about buying new shoes do I get a YouTube ad that evening about new shoes, when I never got that kind of ad before.

Are our phones listening to us while we talk in the car, and then ads are generated from that?

I'd really like to know the answer to that question.

Edit: fixed typo, shoes, not shows.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

It most likely is. And if it’s not your phone, then it’s your car (assuming it has been built in the last few years)

Yeah, that's really creepy. I would only want the phone to listen when I actually ask it a question, not 24/7.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

I highly doubt phones are always listening.

But, they already are.

Some people like the option where they just say "Hey Google" (or whatever) and then the phone talks back to them, so they're always listening so they can hear that initiation sequence. This old article from Vice describes what I'm speaking of.

Personally I'd like the ability to turn that feature off, so I have to explicitly enable the microphone to have Google listen to what I'm saying.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not even just that, humans a incredibly predictable and that predictability is able to be microtargeted based on trends and past activity of an individual.

I literally let years go by between buying shoes, no kidding. So I don't think that what you described would cover my specific case.

Especially out of the blue, and not shown ads for that at all before, and exactly around the same time when that discussion comes up in a moving vehicle.

(As an aside, and in case you're curious, when it comes time to buy new shoes, I usually buy two or three pairs of the same shoe, and then stick the other ones in the closet (usually buy at a really good sales price). Then when the first ones wear out I throw them away, and grab the next pair out of the closet.)

there has been some research a few years ago that proved the opposite, though.

Could you supply a link for that article? I would very much like to read it. Also, I would want it to be a recent article, to be believable for the current conversation we're having.

just a bunch of anecdotal evidence

Well, we all are just black boxing this, as we do not have access to these corporation's servers and what data they collect.

But you have to admit, that in my case at least, Occam's Razor would definitely point you in a certain direction.

in that same article is one from Vice, which backs up what I’ve been stating and assuming

do I get to say “Vice? 2018? Yikes.” now?

Yep, you sure do, especially since it comes from the article you supplied. The point being that showing proof from 2017 does not necessarily cover today's situation.

But it definatley defines that listening in on your phone used to happen back in 2018 at least. Wish we had today's "word" on the subject.

feel free to link more up-to-date research results.

Considering I was asking you originally, you shouldn't expect one from me. I was asking you about your initial point, since you were replying to mine, and would not have if I already the information that backs up what you stated.

No, they don’t just listen all the time with an open mic and just send all audio to the cloud. Anyone in cybersecurity would definitely notice that and sound the alarm.

How would they though? The mic is already known to be always on, and what the servers/back-end are doing with the mic input data is not viewable/known by us on the outside. So how would those 'cybersecurity' people know?

If you’re monitoring the traffic, and you start speaking, and you suddenly see pac6kers spewing out of a device every time you talk, that’s a good indication. There’s indirect methods to analyze it without necessarily being able to see the actual data.

Its already established that the mic always hot, and that data is always being sent to the server.

What they do with the data is not seeable by us. That is the point being discussed, do they listen in to conversations and market off of that data to us.

CosmicCleric ,

Its already established that the mic always hot, and that data is always being sent to the server.

Tell me, how have you established this? What were your methods?

By calling out for the Google assist, without having pushed any button first. It's always listening for the activate/initiate key phrase.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

that your behavior before and after talking to your wife about new shoes signaled that you want to buy new shoes.

There was no previous or after behavior.

We were in a car, long road trip, I mentioned needing to buy new shows during the trip, and when I got home late that evening YouTube was serving me up ads for shoes on my PC. No searches was done before or after the trip (as I mentioned elsewhere, I just go to a store and buy multiple boxes of the same kind of sneakers/shoes on sale).

I'll refer you to the Vice article that has been linked in this conversation above.

The mic is always hot, and neither you or I know what exactly is being stored locally and then sent in batch later on, or sent in real time. Only Google does.

Anti Commercial-AI license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0)

CosmicCleric ,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

It doesn’t have to be your searches, it could have just been the fact that your phone recognized you were on a road trip and that people in your ad cohort tend to want to buy shoes while on road trips.

Are you f'ing kiddig me? You really going to go with that excuse? Somehow by driving from one city to another city on the freeway that tells Google that I want to buy shoes? Come on, that stretches credulity.

Also, sure is weird that that has never happened to me on any of the other times I also drove the same route over the years.

You don’t know the difference between someone saying a microphone is always on (hot) for processing a wake word vs saying the microphone is always on (hot) for data collection.

No, I'm very aware of the distinction, my career was as a computer programmer, and have worked with hardware as well, and I'm very aware of technology, and have an Android certification.

You were just assuming one thing that I was saying, when I was actually saying a general thing.

The mic is hot by default. It has to listen for the activation sequence.

What I'm suggesting is that while that mic is hot it's also gathering other data and storing it locally, and then it sends it off in a batch with other traffic later on, so it's not detectable from someone who's monitoring network traffic from the device.

Temporally, you're assuming that all eavesdropping is transmitted in real time, where I am not.

Is there an automatic way you add it to the end of your comments? As far as I can see it’s not possible in the Boost for Lemmy app on Android…

That will require a signature field, which the Lemmy web client doesn't have, and I'm not aware one way or the other for any of these Android / Apple clients.

What I did was I sent myself a text message, and then whenever I want to use it I just long press hold which copies and then a long press paste in the Lemmy web client editor.

Heres the template that I use...

I was a little curious about this as well, how can you know whether or not this is dissuading the content scrapers?

Ultimately? I don't. You usually can't tell when other people are doing something legally or illegally, you just take it at good faith value they're not doing anything illegally, just like with any other law on the books

I’m familiar with like robot.txt but I’d imagine AI models don’t respect that type of thing the same way.

Well it would be the owners of the robots that are scraping to build the AI models to honor the licensing.

If they don't and it ever gets out that would cause problems for them, so I'm assuming they will, as the alternative is to try to scrub the text and thay would be a lot more time consuming for them to do so (extra steps).

My hope Is that the computer/Linux geeks that are programming those bots are open source minded, and will honor the licensing.

Either way, I'm doing my part, and assuming the bot owners will do what they are supposed to do as well.
