kde , to KDE
@kde@floss.social avatar

Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone-link-requirements-and-setup-cd2a1ee7-75a7-66a6-9d4e-bf22e735f9e3

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

@kde

AeroLemming ,

Does KDE connect actually work with SMS on Windows now? Last time I used it, I couldn't text people, only reply using the notification if they texted me and I happened to click on it quickly enough. Pretty useless.

AeroLemming ,

Thanks, you have saved me the time of trying it again.

OneDrive automatically backups folders in Windows 11 without users' permissions ( windowsreport.com )

According to the latest reports, Windows 11 has made an independent choice by automatically turning on OneDrive folder backup for Desktop, Pictures, Documents, Music, and Video folders without your permission. This signifies that, whether you approve or not, everything is becoming coordinated with the cloud....

If Microsoft was a smaller company, this would completely ruin them and the next headline would be them declaring bankruptcy after failing to fight off 50,000 lawsuits. Fortunately for them, laws don't apply to companies their size.

AeroLemming ,

I only tried one example, so the sample size is pretty small, but that search engine seems pretty bad. I tried looking up "rust bevy points" in both Google and Yep. The first Google result is a library to draw points in Bevy and the rest are pretty relevant. Yep simply doesn't have that result at all and all of their results are just generic results about Bevy.

I tried DDG for the sake of comparison and it's somewhere in-between. The results are mostly relevant and the "correct" result is still on the first page.

As it is now, only people who read about it or live there and try to find the song will ever even know about the block. If Google refused and was kicked out of Hong Kong, just about every single citizen would notice and the government would have to explain precisely why they decided to ban all Google services over a song about freedom. I don't think the people in charge would last long if that happened, considering how integral Google's services are to many people's lives.

AeroLemming ,

Oh ok :(

AeroLemming ,

But bears are just so cute and fluffy! They could never hurt a fly.

AeroLemming ,

Is it any different for an "API"? I don't think there's a very big difference between an HTTP endpoint that returns HTML and an HTTP endpoint that returns JSON.

AeroLemming ,

I meant legally.

AeroLemming ,

Legally. OC stated that NewPipe doesn't worry about legal threats because they scrape instead of using an official API.

AeroLemming ,

Doesn't that only happen on the mobile version? Either way, it's stupid and annoying. Google should start de-ranking sites that add barriers to content, but I know they never will.

AeroLemming ,

Ugh, what a fucking shitshow. I know it won't happen quickly or easily, but I'm hoping to see more people on federated platforms in the next decade or two. It's the only way for us to take the internet back from these greedy bastards.

AeroLemming ,

I had a 1440p monitor and "downgraded" back to 1080p when it broke because I could barely tell the difference when gaming and I get a significantly higher framerate in most games at 1080p, which does make a big difference for me.

AeroLemming ,

Yeah, but that doesn't work well on 1440p because it doesn't scale perfectly.

AeroLemming ,

Can they really sue (with a chance of winning) if you scrape content that's submitted by users? That's insane.

I just finished setting up Linux Mint for an old buddy of mine on his old dog of a laptop, rendering it useful once again! ( i.imgur.com )

Edit 2: to everyone suggesting an SDD: i know. Look, if this guy had enough $$$ for an SSD, he could buy a used lappy less than half the age of this one that has an ssd and 2-3x the memory....

AeroLemming ,

I got a laptop with an HDD a while back because I'm an idiot "more storage space hurr durr!"

It took 10-15 minutes to boot and another 5-10 just to open a web browser when it was running Windows 10. Even once stuff was open, everything was so laggy that it wasn't really usable. I'd miss a solid chunk of whatever we were supposed to be doing on our laptops in class when I was using it for that.

Linux changed EVERYTHING. It boots in just a couple of minutes and only needs a minute or two to settle itself before things start running smoothly. I even managed to play Hollow Knight on it with no lag!

People don't realize how bloated Windows is until they try Linux. If your computer is slow and was made in the last 10 years, no it isn't, your OS is.

You should tell them that if users love ads so much, you should add a slider to let people control how many ads they get. Surely they'll only increase the ad count, right?

AeroLemming ,

If you've ever played Minecraft, basic math is a must unless you want to be wasteful and/or discover you don't have enough of something constantly.

AeroLemming ,

It's physically impossible to perform any type of analysis on a low resolution video and end up with a massively* upscaled and accurate result no matter what sort of technology you use. AI just guesses from what it can see and what it's been trained on. It's the digital equivalent of hiring an artist to create a higher quality rendition of a picture.

*There are some tricks that can be used to "enhance" images and especially videos, but not so much that it's like having optical zoom. For example, a bunch of noisy video frames of the same thing can be combined to get a less noisy result.
