I’m using a cheap one of those from amazon for my headphones on my laptop because the audio jack suddenly stopped recognizing when headphones were plugged in. (although I still get a dmesg error log when I stick a q-tip in to the jack? If anyone knows how to debug this, please tell me)

Not in the same way, as you aren’t using the integrated gpu at all if you get an external one. I guess if you’re talking about shared ram this makes sense though.

@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

yea, IDK how it works as I've never had a computer back then, but the quoted reply makes it sound like getting a sound card would take load off of the CPU.

the idea is that god created semi-hairless primates intentionally to look similar to him. IDK how that is supposed to fit in with our knowledge of natural history, it’s weird to me that people who understand evolution can still think “well some of this is obviously wrong, but perhaps these completely unprovable parts (that seem to rely on the other parts) are right?”

Language is always going to change over time. There’s not much anyone can do about it, whether they like it or not. And if you understand what is being said, does it really matter? There have been language mistakes that have slowly been formalized into written language in the past, and I’m sure that will continue into the future.

IMO writing is only really ‘wrong’ if it doesn’t convey the intended meaning or tone (which I’m sure happens a fair amount as well)

Everyone knew that they would release a cheaper model, and it was always their plan. That’s why it has ‘pro’ in its name.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, I think it could be useful for CAD or 3D art (with proper software) but I can’t think of many other jobs where it would be all that helpful.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Are there still no 3rd party controllers? It seems like controllers like the quest pro has (that can track themselves) would be an easy match. I guess meta is spending millions on development though, so it’s probably not something easily made by a small company.

I would think Bluetooth should provide enough bandwidth, but IDK if apple’s OS is configurable enough to support something like that.

Do not get a base ender 3. Get something direct drive with input shaping and auto bed leveling if you can. If you want a printer that "just works" where (after some setup) you can just press a button and get a print, auto bed leveling is a must-have IMO. I don't have one myself, but I think the neptune 4 for ~$220 is a good option, anything else with similar specs would also work. Look at some reviews on youtube.

Are a wiki and a discord mutually exclusive? They seem to fill very different roles.

IDK, blender.org got DDoS-ed for a while too. It seems like it would take a lot of resources for no possible benefit to anyone involved.

I would say the distinction is that lemmy doesn't have a personalized algorithm.

yea, its funny to see xkcd.com/792 from 2010, back when google wasn't evil

Well, with models like SD at least, the datasets are large enough and the employees are few enough that it is impossible to have a human filter every image. They scrape them from the web and try to filter with AI, but there is still a chance of bad images getting through. This is why most companies install filters after the model as well as in the training process.

Since the start of the Israeli operation, more than 35,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, including over 15,000 children and 10,000 women. Over 10,000 others are missing and presumed trapped under rubble. Nearly all of the strip's 2.3 million Palestinian population has been forcibly displaced, and a lesser number of Israelis internally displaced. Israel's tightened blockade cut off basic necessities and its attacks on infrastructure have led to a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, including a collapse of the healthcare system and an impending famine. By early 2024, Israeli forces had damaged or destroyed more than half of Gaza's houses, at least a third of its tree cover and farmland, most of its schools and universities, hundreds of cultural landmarks, and dozens of cemeteries.

We don’t know how many of the Palestinians killed were part of Hamas.

If I was lost in the woods, a human would be more likely to have cell phone service or know the way out. And realistically, it’s just going to be some hiker or birder, which from what I’ve seen are generally welcoming groups.

AdrianTheFrog ,

Yeah, I think games just take longer to develop nowadays than anyone is prepared for, especially the managers. Both companies and gamers have yet to realize that there is only so much you can accomplish in a certain span of time.

It really reads like it was written by AI. I’ve never been to linkedin, maybe everyone talks like that there but it really sounds like it was written by ChatGPT

This really reminds me of the latest wendover video. It seems like large companies see small studios as an investment and take any chance to cash out and fire everyone as soon as it’s hurting their short term profits.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

Currently any AI models that have the ability to make complex decisions are trained to recreate patterns from their training data. At its current state, you'd have to be pretty exceptionally stupid to make an AI that wants to kill you, and give it that ability at the same time. Of course - who knows what's going on at all of these private corporations and military contractors, but I think regular war, fascism, and nuclear weapons are by orders of magnitude the bigger threat.

They're not a chip manufacturer designer though, and modern phone processors are already fast enough to do near real time text generation and fast image generation (20 tokens/second llama 2, ~1 second for a distilled SD 1.5, on Snapdragon 8 Gen 3)

Unfortunately, the cheapest phones with that processor seem about $650, and the Rabbit R1 costs $200 and uses a MediaTek Helio P35 from late 2018.

Qualcomm is listed as having $10 billion in yearly profits (Intel has ~20B, Nvidia has ~80B), the news articles I can find about Rabbit say its raised around $20 million in funding ($0.02 billion). It takes a lot of money to make decent custom chips.

I stopped being a Musk supporter when I found out he had a twitter.

I still think all of his companies are doing (to various extents) genuinely cool and useful things, but Musk in recent years at least has shown himself to be a terrible manager (not to mention a terrible person)

It hasn't been proprietary for a little while, its an official standard now. They had to open it in order to receive government funding for charger construction.

The North American Charging Standard (NACS), being standardized as SAE J3400, is an electric vehicle (EV) charging connector system developed by Tesla, Inc. It has been used by all North American market Tesla vehicles since 2021 and was opened for use by other manufacturers in November 2022. It is backwards compatible with the proprietary Tesla connectors made before 2021. (link)

AdrianTheFrog ,

A requirement for them to receive $7.5 billion in government funding for charger construction was for them to allow other cars to charge on their network, which required opening the standard.

Hamas official says group would lay down its arms if an independent Palestinian state is established ( apnews.com )

A top Hamas political official told The Associated Press the Islamic militant group is willing to agree to a truce of five years or more with Israel and that it would lay down its weapons and convert into a political party if an independent Palestinian state is established along pre-1967 borders.

AdrianTheFrog ,
@AdrianTheFrog@lemmy.world avatar

The IDF has killed 11 thousand men, 9 thousand women, and 14 thousand children, making 34 thousand total killed (an unknown number of which were civilians). Hamas has killed 0.6 thousand military personnel and 0.8 thousand civilians, making 1.4 thousand total killed (57% of which were civilians).

The number of children killed by Isreal (only children) is 17 times larger than the number of civilians killed by Hamas. Of course that doesn't make killing civilians OK, but I struggle to see an argument that Hamas is worse than the IDF. And if Hamas is the only method by which Palestine can defend itself, then there is a solid argument to be made for it being the lesser evil.

I actually know what this means, from getting my mom’s Atari to work on my grandmother’s TV

I think it was channel 2 for that one though, idk. We switched to using the flatscreen because of the annoying high pitched noise. (To the annoyance of all retro gamers who read this)
