Phone Link is Microsoft's late and closed source alternative to KDE Connect. It requires you sign in to a Microsoft Account for it to work.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone-link-requirements-and-setup-cd2a1ee7-75a7-66a6-9d4e-bf22e735f9e3

This means all the transactions between your phone and your PC are monitored and sucked up by Microsoft.

AVincentInSpace ,

Interesting that they bothered to make this considering KDE Connect already works on Windows

Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough ( www.xda-developers.com )

There were a number of exciting announcements from Apple at WWDC 2024, from macOS Sequoia to Apple Intelligence. However, a subtle addition to Xcode 16 — the development environment for Apple platforms, like iOS and macOS — is a feature called Predictive Code Completion. Unfortunately, if you bought into Apple's claim that...

Last few days before summer break. All my final projects are in and I've got one last final exam to study for. Home stretch. Just gotta make it a few more days.

Everybody always says this, but I've yet to talk to anyone who even has an anecdote of talking to a Gen Z person for whom that's true.

have a >1 ratio to download anything which is impossible by definition

They give you a bit of leniency after you first sign up. All that share ratio means is that you leave your computer seeding for a while after your download finishes, and when your torrent client has uploaded the file you got from them to e.g. 5 other people you can stop seeding it. They're asking you to give back, is all. If you download a 3GB file from other people in the swarm and then immediately close the torrent before anybody can download it from you, after enough repeat times of you doing that, they'll stop letting you download new files.

Trackers cannot read, and are not interested in, the number at the bottom of your torrent client, or your history with other trackers. They just care that you seed their torrents after you've finished downloading them so other people can download them too.

AVincentInSpace ,

The system isn't closed though. More people join the tracker all the time, and that's to say nothing of the people who already have access to the tracker downloading a new file.

AVincentInSpace ,

I know the names of three of those characters. I know more than that about one of them.

AVincentInSpace ,

if your hosting provider 1) is not yourself and 2) requires you to use anything like filezilla, get a new hosting provider

AVincentInSpace ,

Unless you're using Linode or something other general purpose VPS which you have installed a Minecraft server onto, having to use anything other than a WebUI to exchange files with the server really strikes me as sketchy. A dedicated can't-run-anything-else Minecraft hosting provider even giving random users SSH access is sketchy enough but requiring you to use it to update the game... that level of not having an IT guy is just a security nightmare waiting to happen.

Guessing by your comment that you've actually rented a general purpose Linux VPS and not gotten suckered into Honest Pete's Discount CreeperHost. In that case, carry on.

AVincentInSpace ,

That's fair actually. I was more worried about Minecraft hosts that allow you to upload your own game executable (which I sincerely hope don't exist)

AVincentInSpace ,

what about people who have their fursona as their pfp

So it's not well known enough to be parody as opposed to plagiarism in one context, but everyone has heard of it and is calling it out for plagiarism in another?

Makes perfect sense.

AVincentInSpace ,

I can follow a conversation just fine. In one thread, someone says it's more parody than plagiarism, although the original isn't super well known so people might not recognize it as parody, to which you reply that it obviously is since three people have called it out for being plagiarism. In this thread, you ask how something can possibly be parody if the original isn't well enough known.

Funny though that you gripe about a comic not being well known enough to be effectively parodied in reply to a comment saying the original has its own KnowYourMeme page, then accuse me of not being able to follow a conversation.

AVincentInSpace ,

My definition of plagiarism doesn't depend on how many people know about a thing.

AVincentInSpace , (edited )

No seriously. What context am I missing? You've done nothing this entire thread except scream plagiarism and call everyone who isn't you a moron.

In the chain I linked to, you say it's a blatant ripoff of another comic, Samus12345 says it's a play on the same idea referencing elden ring, someone else says what the original was about (adding nothing), Samus12345 says it's clearly meant to be a parody although since the original isn't well known the parody should be presented in context, and you chime in again saying it's been called out for plagiarism, so clearly it is well known.

In the chain we're now in, you and Samus12345 go back and forth, with you saying it's a blatant ripoff and Samus12345 (correctly) arguing it's a parody (although it should show the original for context), and you ask how something can possibly be a parody if no one except you and two other people have ever seen the original.

We could have a whole other discussion about why the number of people who know about the original is a fucking stupid definition of plagiarism, and how now that everyone reading this thread has been made aware of the original's existence and the ways that the "rip-off" innovates on it, the claims of plagiarism no longer really hold water (unless you want to argue that since it wasn't OP who linked the original they were trying to steal credit, which... just... no), but I still don't see how something can be well-known enough to be recognized as plagiarism but not well known enough to be recognized as parody.

IPv6 is already backwards compatible though. There's a /96 of the IPv6 space (i.e. 32 bit addresses) specifically for tunneling IPv4 traffic, and existing applications and IPv4 servers Just Work™ on IPv6 only networks, assuming the host operating system and routing infrastructure know about the 6to4 protocol and are willing to play ball.

I learned a lot about it from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-oLBOL0rDE

Still slogging through the last two weeks of school. (Still don't understand why this community college has to start and end like a month later than everybody else.) Just have to finish two more math assignments and write two papers (one of which is minimum 7 pages) and then I'm free and clear to start speed summering during the 5-week window where my summer break and my siblings' actually overlap. Ugh.

On the plus side, though, my Framework laptop is coming in the mail tomorrow, and I'm super excited for that. I've always been a huge fan of open source and repairability and being able to take things apart, see how they work, and make them do something different, so I'm a huge believer in what the Framework company is doing. Plus the one I ordered is fully kitted out and massively overspecced (do I need 7TB of storage or 32GB of RAM? No, but why not get them anyway?) and unlike my current laptop I'm actually going to be able to game on it! Looking forward to playing Cyberpunk 2077 at more than 20 frames per second with every graphical option turned all the way down! (Gotta love that iGPU life...)

Another thing I'm super excited for is the Open Sauce convention this weekend! I was there last year, saw a bunch of cool gadgets people had built, and got autographs from a few of my favorite YouTubers in the technology space, and that was super cool! Really looking forward to going again and seeing even more cool stuff and getting an autograph from Technology Connections which was the one I really wanted last year but couldn't get.

AVincentInSpace ,

this may be the most based thing I've heard anyone on Lemmy say

AVincentInSpace ,

I AM NOT! A! MORON!

Watch, hold on, I'll prove it! I'll perform a feat of brute strength in a blind rage that will end up hurting me in the long run! Then later when I find out that massive fall didn't actually kill you and you fought your way back up through 2km worth of test chambers powered by sheer spite to come and confront me, I'll act like nothing happened and beg you for your help because I have no idea how to run this place and it's falling apart and the robot test subjects I built don't work at all!

Huh? Could a moron do that?

In the early days of C#, before it was called C#, Microsoft gave it the most Microsoft name ever conceived for anything ever: Visual J++

AVincentInSpace ,

update: i just looked it up and they are not. Visual J++ is a predecessor to C#. Nevertheless, the name "Visual J++" in all its Microsoftian goodness(?) is as good a descriptor as any for what C# turned into

As horrified as I was to read this, it is a little exciting to think that I live in a world where Bluetooth radios are so inexpensive that building it that way is cheaper

AVincentInSpace ,

Why do they need Bluetooth at all though? Why not pull the audio through the Lightning plug like official Apple accessories do?

If I had to take a guess, it's because the audio signal coming out of the Lightning port is encrypted because Apple hates everyone who isn't them

AVincentInSpace ,

Bluetooth's digital too, my guy. You need a digital-analog converter either way. It's just that when you use the Lightning port for audio you don't also need a Bluetooth radio. Besides, USB DAC chips are like a dollar.

Also you just proved my point that they only did this to avoid licensing fees.

Yo man, same. I decided to go to the gym today for the first time since February and... well, I'm not as strong as I used to be, that's for sure, but it felt really good. I think I'll start doing it more.

Also -- as someone on year 8 of his Linux journey, the start of the road can be rocky, but as long as you stick with it and learn the Linux way of doing things, it is very much worth it. A lot of people like customizing every aspect of their system, and as we all know Linux can deliver that, but I'm very much a fan of a system that just gets out of my way and lets me get stuff done, and Linux can deliver that too.

AVincentInSpace ,

I've been fooling around with an adjustable free weight at home, and forcing myself to do a few (12-15) pushups, bicep curls, or plank hold every night before I let myself go to sleep. It's no substitute for a gym (hence why I found I was so much weaker lol), especially with only one or two sets, but it's nice to keep my hand in.

It's also nice to know I can hold a plank position for 5 minutes without stopping.

Old? Newgrounds is still around! In fact, thanks to the Ruffle project reimplementing Flash Player in WASM, all the old Flash games on it are playable in any HTML5 browser!

We live in an era where you can play Henry Stickmin on your phone! How cool is that? What a time to be alive!

Not everyone is trans, homesicle. If I take a long hard look at my gender and decide that I'm happier as the man I was born than as a woman, that's my business. Trying to force me into a female body would make me just as miserable as your male one was for you.

Also I couldn't help but notice that you seem to conflate anger as a concept with masculinity.
