#OptGreen with #GNU/#Linux to keep your device in use! These machines will run beautifully for many years to come.
Not only wallet friendly, #upcycling keeps CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere. Ca. 75% of Apple's emissions comes from production alone (details in alt text).
@phoenix Regarding the assumed operating life of devices:
"For the purposes of our assessment, years of use, which are based on first owners, are modeled to be four years for macOS and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices. Most Apple products last longer and are passed along, resold, or returned to Apple by the first owner for others to use."
Thank you, that sheds some light onto it, yes. I'm still wondering how this number marches up. Just using the device by far uses not even comparable amount of energy than e.g. the production and then it also depends if you use green energy or a diesel generator in your backyard.
I am sure some other anarchists might have already mentioned this (I dont know & cant remember), but towards the beginning of this genocide it occurred to me & I mentioned too.
The primary reason why Palestinians are oppressed (by extension everyone else who are oppressed across the world) is because they are systematically denied the tools of self-defence to free themselves of the oppression.
The reason why this genocide is going on now is because there is no deterrence for the oppressor (genocidal entity) for commiting the crimes its committing.
If Palestinians had weapons, this fascist entity would have never dared to commit the crimes it has been committing for nearly a century.
One thing is a given. Every oppressed population would want to fight back for their dignity incl Palestinians, but they are systematically denied the tools to defend themselves & one of the most important thing they need is weapons.
All "political solutions" without them having access to tools of self-defence will only be oppression with another name.
For those who dream of a society without oppression, without State, without Capital, without all other systems of domination (Fascism/Racism/Misogyny/Casteism/Religion/…), one of the most important thing is public dissemination of knowledge of weapon manufacturing.
Even in theory its impossible to emancipate without weapons when the enemy have them, this enemy not just some but have warehouses of them with an industrial pipeline filling its supply lines, while its oppressed have none.
The reason why State has "export controls", marks details as "classified"/"state secrets", makes its industries hide all of this under "know how", "trade secrets" (using the intellectual property scam), criminalises weapon manufacturing that it doesn't control is mainly because it wants its primary enemies (people it rules over) to not have any mechanism of self-defence to fight back.
This way it can oppress "peacefully" while in the best case all its victims are allowed to do is "protest" aka so called "freedom of speech", … i.e go & shout till you exhaust yourself & nothing more.
@MageInBlack@kde Some background: KDE Eco has funded projects supported by the KDE e.V. and community. The name is derived from the website eco.kde.org, originally created for the FOSS-oriented project "Blauer Engel For FOSS" (BE4FOSS). Since 2021 we've been in contact with many FOSS projects/communities as well as people working on measuring software's energy consumption, digital sustainability, etc. Much is still work in progress and as newsworthy things happen we make sure to post about it.
@Bro666@d3Xt3r Ran EndeavourOS/Plasma 6 and FreeBSD/ Plasma5 on a similar specced machine (Dell Inspiron 1525 with a slightly slower CPU but upped RAM to 3GB, ssd and faster wifi ) all fine.
Firefox, libroffice, thunderbird, dolphin, kate... All ok. No gaming but retro stuff (baldursgate 1+2, scummvm, platformers), no 4K streaming, tho :)
Only thing was, No blur effects due to hw limitations of the Intel gma GPU
Toying around with OpenBSD and Plasma on that machine, now.
I installed the beta with this, and I believe this fixed a bunch of flashing while streaming games from a KDE desktop in Wayland when streaming over 120fps using Sunshine (the desktop would flash every now and again, this didnt happen using Hyprland, which I switched back from)
Late to the party but just another vote for Nextcloud. I used a paid subscription initially but then took the plunge, bought a Pi 4 & SSD for storage then read up & figured out how to self host.
It was my first experience with Linux, I fell over many times but dont give in as after all the hair pulling & teeth grinding it becomes rewarding & even a little "fun" when you get there & then become confident enough to take on & complete further Pi projects.
The Pi can handle Libre Office (synced through Nextcloud, handled on mobile by Collabora Office).
Whilst you're at it, why not sync the notes you'll inevitability make on your self hosting journey through your Nextcloud instance? Try Joplin & do away with Google Docs, Evernote etc into the bargain
I trialled the self hosted NextCloud for a while, but the quality of apps is just meh. So instead I bought a Synology NAS. Turned out their apps are actually on par with Google. And you own everything.
FOSS - ensuring even new hardware stays in use when vendor-support eventually ends!
Whether or not you install GNU/Linux on it today, your new #Mac will eventually lose #Apple support. Thanks to the impressive work of #Asahi#Linux project (@AsahiLinux), it will not need to end up in the landfill once it does.
