For the last #FannyFriday in #PrideMonth I have a #sapphic art piece that is unfortunately quite hard to decipher. It's a #lesbian sex scene from the suburban baths of #Pompeii where the sexy frescoes in the changing room were probably an aid to remember where you left your stuff. This is scene number V. The patches of dark colour are remains of the repainting of the wall.
Dated 62 to 79 CE.
For the first #FannyFriday in #PrideMonth I offer you a rare depiction of women loving women in Graeco-Roman art. These ladies are engaged in some good old oral 👌
Have a beautiful Day of Aphrodite aka Venus' Day aka Frigg's Day aka Friday 🌹
"Her gods and men call Aphrodite, and Aphrogeneia (the foam-born) because she grew amid the foam, and well-crowned Kythereia because she reached Kythera, and Kyprogenes because she was born in billowy Kypros, and Philommedes (Genital-Loving) because sprang from the members."
Hesiod, Theogony 176
Get to your weekend like the maenad you are, beautiful people! Low slung coverings, trays of delights, and the ability to float through the air are non-negotiable.
I give you a Nereid fanny for #FannyFriday. It is just the mons veneris, hairless to match the Graeco-Roman beauty ideal. It may be that a slit is too difficult to do in a mosaic as there are other artworks depicting it. But this one erases that part of the #vulva.
Since @aurochs asked if there are "merwomen" with human genitals, this is the closest image that I personally know of: a Nereid swimming right behind the chariot of Neptunus / Poseidon.
Maybe the @phistorians know any art of female tritones?
