nekandro OP , in Philippines’ Marcos ‘horrified’ by Xi-Duterte ‘gentleman’s agreement’ for status quo in disputed waters

Wait, you mean China is the one that's been consistent on policy and the Philippines was flipflopping?

PanArab , in The liberal international order is slowly coming apart. Its collapse could be sudden and irreversible.

Sooner than later I hope. The genocide in Gaza proves the liberal international order isn't working and needs to go away.

Nomecks ,

It won't be replaced with something better.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Why not?

Nomecks ,

Show me the collapse of a large governmental structure that wound up with a better replacement. France is on their fifth republic since the revolution. The liberal order is collapsing into authoritarianism and conflict. That will continue for some time I'm guessing.

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

French Revolution, Haitian Revolution, Russian Revolution, Cuban Revolution, Chinese Revolution, American Revolution, etc.

Typically Revolutions happen because existing conditions were abysmal, they don't happen randomly or for no reason. Even if what takes the place of the previous state is flawed or highly flawed, what replaces it is usually better to much better, assuming it collapsed via revolution and not external conflict or internal collapse.

brain_in_a_box ,

The liberal other was already one of authoritarianism and conflict.

BakerBagel ,

Because said neoliberal order has soent the past 40 years crushing any criticism from the left and sowing the seeds for fascism. Corporations aren't going to give up all the power they have accumulated without a fight

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

Fascism is a reactionary response to the decay of Capitalism, yes, but Socialism is the natural evolution beyond Capitalism. The left can and will win against the fascists.

BakerBagel ,

That's the hope, but the liberals will crown the fascists rather than concede anything to the socialists. I'm not expecting any large socialist movement here in the US, and fully expect a fascist purging of all their "undesirables".

Cowbee ,
@Cowbee@lemmy.ml avatar

The US will not have a large leftist movement until the global south pushes back and lifestyles in the US are no longer inflated by extreme global exploitation. If the global south revolts, as they seem to be over time, the opportunity will come and what has been minor quantitative shifts will result in a qualitative change in the US.

PanArab ,

This is one case where better the devil you don't know.

HobbitFoot ,

The problem is that previous collapses of globalism have generally been followed by a period of destructive wars.

Lithium for liberals. 'we are saving the planet by doing nothing that inconveniences us hurray'

Nobody , in Record-breaking increase in CO2 levels in world’s atmosphere

Maybe it’s methane release. Maybe it’s gasses from the sea floor we knew nothing about. We have no fucking clue what climate change is going to look like. PR firms told scientists to put the lowest projections in press releases for the last decade. The real numbers are both grim and proving to be optimistic.

As it turns out, the math was all wrong. Who knows why? Maybe all the Earth’s various systems are interrelated, and when one system collapses it causes dozens of other systems to collapse. Maybe Earth and the delicate balance that enabled life to grow on this planet is a little more sensitive to sudden, radical change than we thought.

Maybe all the people who lied about climate change since the 1970s lied about more shit we’re going to find out about shortly now that we can’t stop it from happening. But they’ll still make their profits and get their taxpayer-funded subsidies, so capitalism is working as intended.

Corkyskog ,

Gasses from the sea floor

It's kind of crazy to me how what felt like yesterday they were like oh yeah, let's see how bad dredging is? Oh it's the equivalent of the aviation industry...

We have had very smart people working on climate change models for decades and no one ever looked into that? Or has dredging increased so much recently that it was barely a factor before?

Nomecks ,

It's definitely increased a lot in the last few decades, as ships have gotten insanely huge.

emergencyfood ,

We have had very smart people working on climate change models for decades and no one ever looked into that?

The problem isn't that no one has looked into it. The problem - and this is a general one for any scientist working in climate change or environmental protection - is that we can't afford to raise a single false alarm. We can't publish bad news unless we're 100% certain, because that will give oil companies' lawyers and 'journalists' enough ammo for the next fifty years. This means that published climate predictions are usually the most optimistic and conservative estimates.

It turns out that humanity is more like an aggressive cancer than a disease.

autotldr Bot , in ‘They’ve destroyed us because of some tweets’: why has Saudi Arabia targeted these three sisters?

This is the best summary I could come up with:

In September 2022, Fawzia al-Otaibi was a week into a trip to her home country of Saudi Arabia, staying with a friend near the Bahrain border, when her phone rang.

It was a police officer who, in 2019, had tracked her down and fined her for public indecency after she had posted a video on her Snapchat account, showing her dancing in jeans and a baseball cap at a concert in Riyadh.

She and her two sisters, Maryam and Manahel, had become targets in a campaign of arrests, threats and intimidation by the Saudi authorities after they had used their popular social media channels to post about women’s rights.

This time it was to tell her that Manahel had been convicted of terrorism offences by a court in Saudi Arabia, for uploading pictures of herself with her head uncovered, and social media posts supporting women’s rights.

Although they were very different – Maryam, the older sister, was maternal and protective; Manahel was adventurous and extroverted; Fawzia quieter and more private – they all refused to accept what they were being taught about the role of women in Saudi society.

Fawzia’s continued activism on behalf of her sisters – and refusal to be silenced on calling for women’s rights – means that she faces a constant barrage of online harassment and abuse from anonymous accounts, and from Saudi government officials who say she is bringing shame on her family and homeland.

I would be glad if Israel wins Eurovision. It will destroy its credibility forever, as well as that of most if not all European sports/theatre/culture events, including FIFA and UEFA.

FaceDeer , in Ukraine parliament passes bill for prisoners to join army
@FaceDeer@fedia.io avatar

Ukraine's approach is very different from Russia's when you look at the details, though. They're not taking rapists or murderers, and they only accept applications if you have three years or less left in your sentence.

sik0fewl ,

It kinda sucks though. If you're looking for moral high ground, doing this out of defence/existence of your nation is better than trying to eliminate someone else's.

InputZero ,

Ukraine isn't letting any prisoner serve,

Among those not eligible to serve include those found guilty of sexual violence, killing two or more people, serious corruption and former high-ranking officials, Shuliak said.

Hopefully they won't be turned into cannon fodder like Russia did to their prisoner soldiers.

Woozythebear ,

"Hopefully they won't be turned into cannon fodder like Russia did to their prisoner soldiers."

Spoiler alert, they will be.

ZC3rr0r ,

All Infantry is cannon fodder to some extent, but so far Ukraine's casualty numbers for their deployed personnel have been a lot better than Russia's.

I hope they can maintain that track record.

brain_in_a_box ,

Ukraine’s casualty numbers

As reported by who?

ZC3rr0r ,

The official count released recently by the Ukrainian government was 31k, vs Russia's totally believable 6k dead on their own side.

I will happily concede both have incentives to misrepresent their casualty numbers but the difference between Ukraine's official death toll and the estimates you see from military analysts have a much smaller discrepancy than the official reported losses and independent analysis on the Russian side.

But hey, you believe what you want to believe. We're all still free to disagree.

Dasus ,
@Dasus@lemmy.world avatar

Simply untrue according to the article, but it's not like you bothered to even click the link, right?

Mobilisation would be voluntary and open only to certain categories of prisoners.

Among those not eligible to serve include those found guilty of sexual violence, killing two or more people, serious corruption and former high-ranking officials, Shuliak said.

Only prisoners with under three years left to serve on their sentence may apply, she said. Any prisoners who are mobilised would be granted parole rather than a pardon.

They're giving the option for prisoners to apply to be a part of defending Ukraine. They're not conscripting rapists to cannon fodder battalions or anything like that, ffs.

PolandIsAStateOfMind ,
@PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml avatar

You did not even read my comment else you would know i'm not talking about new law but about the deerboy lying through his teeth to whitewash the ukronazis, as is his custom since he shown up here.

Also idk if they were taking rapists to be their cannon fodder, though the mere existence of reddit warriors there is a strong pointer they were, but they were confirmed to taking the rapists out of jail as their elites.

Dasus ,
@Dasus@lemmy.world avatar

but they were confirmed to taking the rapists out of jail as their elites.

Sure they were, lil ruskito, sure they were.

Ofc I'll believe you rather than credible journalistic outlets, why wouldn't I? Ofc Ukraine had elite rapist battalions before their own laws allowed convicts to serve in the army, of course they did. Why wouldn't they?
