Wrench , in Figma Disables AI App Design Tool After It Copied Apple’s Weather App

... OK?

Most people would design a very similar app if asked to design a weather app. Due diligence would be looking at existing apps in the space and making a decision on how much you want to deviate from the norm.

I once had to make an EPG for a TV app. EPGs are the channel schedules on any cable box interface.

It was stupidly complicated getting the navigation down solid. Took a long time. My boss asked at the end "this is great. Can we patent anything from it?"

Uh, no. Anyone with the same problem (navigating multiple channel schedules at once via arrow keys) is going to come up with something similar.

Same with weather apps. And Apple even has guidelines on app layouts for scrolling vs drilling down nested pages.

Seems like the AI did exactly what a human would do.

anlumo ,

Patenting obvious solutions is done all the time and perfectly fine from a legal point of view.

CrazyLikeGollum , in People in San Francisco Are Mad That a New App Lets You Spy on Bars to See How Busy They Are

I’m generally in favor of privacy, but a bar is public place. There is no reasonable expectation of privacy. Unless they’re putting cameras in the bathrooms, I don’t see how this is an issue. They likely already have security cameras that are recording, this just makes some of those publicly viewable. Other than an additional layer of convenience, how is this any different from walking into a bar, seeing it’s packed, and leaving.

helpImTrappedOnline ,

The potential for misue is too great.

Security cams are not available to anyone - only the bar staff has (hopefully limited) access to the video. While everything is recorded, unless something happens you can be confident the video will end up deleted.

There's a difference from being watched by some creep through the window and being watched by a dozen creeps wanking off to you in a basment.

CrazyLikeGollum ,

I would say the potential for misuse, while definitely present, is outweighed by the potential benefits.

A creep watching you from their basement is less likely to act on their dangerous impulses.

An overcrowded bar, poses a lot of risks in itself and the ability to determine how crowded the bar is without having to be physically present can mitigate your exposure to those risks.

In a crowded bar you have a higher risk of being drugged or assaulted because security and staff will likely be distracted or simply unable to notice and intervene. Also, in the event of an emergency that requires you to be able exit quickly, such as a fire or earthquake not only will it be much more difficult to leave it’s also more likely that people will panic and exasperate the problem.

Is a camera with a public live feed the best way to achieve that? No, probably not. But it’s simple, cheap, and gets the job done.

A bar is also a public venue. In a public place you have absolutely no reasonable expectation of privacy. So, while in most circumstances it’s unreasonable to expect that you’re being recorded, it’s equally unreasonable to expect that you’re not.

catloaf ,

You don't need a video feed to determine how busy a place is. Google maps already does this via people with location reporting turned on.

conciselyverbose , (edited )

Fuck that. It absolutely is not a norm to have anyone with an internet connection watch you drink, and is an obscene safety risk. Making a camera publicly accessible should automatically revoke your liquor license and permanently bar the owner from ever being able to apply for one again.

Alexstarfire ,

Sounds like you just made that up.

conciselyverbose ,

People absolutely will be stalked and attacked as a direct result of this insane horseshit if it is not shut down.

It is unconditionally not acceptable.

Alexstarfire ,

I meant the losing your license part. The rest is NSAs wet dream.

conciselyverbose ,

I said you should. It's that catastrophically dangerous, and it isn't a mistake.

aaaa ,

I'm shocked at what an unpopular thought this is. Like... If you go out in public, there's a very real risk that people in public will see you. If that's a concern you have, then you should take steps to not be seen in public. To me, that would mean not making my presence obvious when visiting a bar.

Camera or not, if people are looking for you, they will find ways to look for you in public places. You should always assume you're being watched, because you probably already are.

CosmoNova , in UN adopts Chinese resolution with US support on closing the gap in access to artificial intelligence

I get that countries should work together in this field but I doubt this will have the positive effect people are hoping for. This aims to speed up AI research even more so our (the people’s) control of it grows even thinner.

China wants a piece of the cake through this resolution because their homegrown efforts in regenerative AI have been quite fruitless so far despite their many claims of being a top player in recent years. But it’s an autocratic surveillance state with tons of data.

So what‘s going to happen is that they‘ll give more access to their massive datasets in exchange for being more involved into the development process of the real big players in the USA. They‘ll then use it to build an even tighter surveillance apparatus together and suppress people even more in china, the US and globally.

Andromxda ,
@Andromxda@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

It's not just Linux, but free & open source software in general. And it's not just desktop PCs that are plagued by this corporate spyware, it's much worse when looking at the mobile device landscape. The only real solution for mobile devices is GrapheneOS with FOSS software installed from the F-Droid marketplace. Browsers are also under attack by proprietary software corporations, Google just intentionally broke adblockers on all Chromium-based browsers, so they can generate more ad revenue. Last year, they tried to push a proposal that would have massively extended their monopoly on web browsers (WEI). All the streaming services are screwing their users over and increasing the subscription prices while making the content library smaller. It's such a fucking scam, and it's almost sad to see how many people are dumb enough to fall for it.

Why is the post title so click bait when the article only talks about mutation testing which is just a specific testing technique? A lot of testing is still done manually not even automated, it might be possible to automate test suite creation with generative ai and it's already being done in the field but nobody really want tests that might be wrong which is the whole point of testing.

ArmokGoB ,

Voting costs you nothing and you should do it, even if it feels like a waste of time. However, going to BLM in 2020 made me realize how pointless being "politically active" is. Nothing will change for the better in the US unless people arm themselves and strike fear into the state itself.

It sounds really grim, but if politicians feared they’d be shot for their greed, maybe we’d have a more fair society.
