noodlejetski , in It's possible to back up my Whatsapp chats without using Google accounts?

yeah, it's possible. I use SwiftBackup for that purpose (closed source with internet access disabled; requires root).

Xirup OP ,
@Xirup@yiffit.net avatar

Can you please explain me how does that work? I mean, if I backup all my Whatsapp data and then I try to restore it on other phone, that would work just that easy?

noodlejetski ,

I managed to back up my chats and then restore it after flashing a custom ROM (so technically "another phone") that way. it just copies the entire app with all its settings and contents and then lets you restore it to that previous state.

aa1 , in can I connect a phone to a car without using android auto/apple equivalent? is there a good private way of doing this in newer cars?

Hi! One thing you could consider is using GrapheneOS which supports Android Auto without special priviliges!

CameronDev , in IMEI extremely important question

If its that serious, dont take your phone (or any device). A nation state will have no trouble tracking you if you're a worthy target.

You are asking in the wrong place. Your country will have a department of foreign affairs or similar, you should be speaking to them. They are the experts.

Connect it for what purpose? Audio only? I've bought a Bluetooth to Aux-In adapter, it's a tiny USB dongle that pairs with your phone, and sends audio to the line-in port of the car radio (if you have one).

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/UGREEN-Bluetooth-Receiver-Audio-Cable/dp/B081GGB53R/

Edit: My car doesn't support Bluetooth out of the box, hence this workaround.

If you're looking for privacy you might as well buy an older model and put in a Bluetooth stereo replacement in it.

You're not going to find a modern car that isn't spying on you.

KillerTofu , in can I connect a phone to a car without using android auto/apple equivalent? is there a good private way of doing this in newer cars?

Is Bluetooth not an option?

Vej OP ,

I actually don't know if newer cars can just use Bluetooth without an app. I've been thinking of replacing my car with something more practical which is why I posted this. I don't know how much privacy newer cars have left.

scytale ,

Some car infotainment systems have settings where you can set them to only connect to your phone via bluetooth and not apple carplay/android auto

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Unless it's changed in newer car models, Android auto only connects when you physically plug it into one of the provided USB ports in the center console/glove compartment. The BT connection only allows media and phone usage (audio and SMS). You won't get maps or other apps to appear on the in vehicle display, though.

MacOS has had spotlight search which searches any shit in your computer in 0.1s for over 10 years now. We have a pity search engine that takes 5 minutes to look up for a slightly obscure file in your computer and this piece of shit is all that they can come up with?

normonator , in What is Windows 11 'AI Explorer'? Everything you need to know about Microsoft's upcoming defining AI PC feature (this will be used for tracking)

This is exactly the kind of shit I don't ever want my fucking computer doing. You don't need to track shit. You do what I tell you and then you shut the fuck up.

I shouldn't have to fight with my devices. It's the exact reason I got rid of my iPhone. When you fight against something long enough, you end up migrating to devices/software that let you do the crap you need to.

I mean, it can track the files on the drive and make searching for things I have on the computer faster (indexing). Or it would on a good OS, anyway. 🤷🏻‍♂️

rar ,

Whenever I bring up the issue all I get is blank stares of "how can you not be excited if you work with computers?". I just wanna scream.

UpperBroccoli , in What is Windows 11 'AI Explorer'? Everything you need to know about Microsoft's upcoming defining AI PC feature (this will be used for tracking)

Sources say AI Explorer features a UI that runs along the top of the screen, and lets users recall memories based on the user's inputted search criteria. Because AI Explorer is recording and triaging everything you do on your computer, anything and everything becomes something you can search for.

Hello Billy, how are you today? Do you want to search for more incest porn, or may I serve you some 'hot milfs in your area', like last tuesday? Or perhaps you need a new fleshlight, considering how worn-down your current one is. And by the way, next time you use that, it would be great if you could cover your camera. Even an AI has its limits, thank you so very much. Remember: I see everything and I cannot ever forget, even if I might want to.

Jfc, every damn thing people said they were going to do after ousting apps and the mods that protested are coming true.

It's ludicrous how shitty they are in not even trying to hide it any more.

CatTrickery , in AnarSec | GrapheneOS for Anarchists

My issue with GrapheneOS is that its Pixel only. It means having to buy a phone from a BDS company that doesn't have a removable battery. Honestly a dealbreaker for me

aa1 OP ,

Hi! While your idea is understandable, i think we have to think about one thing: what about other vendors ? It's not like Samsung, Xiaomi, Fairphone etc. run on open source hardware. If you use any smarthpone, you have to accept you'll use closed source hardware. That being said, if we speak about hardware quality Google Pixels are the best ones, that's because you can install an alternative operating system without compromise the device's security. It does not make sense to go "fuck Google" and then buy another smartphone which came from a company that does the extact same thing - spy on you - but without the possibilty to install an alternative OS.

As a second thought, i think the theory "Google puts backdoors on Pixels to spy on users" has a big fallacy: Google already do that, but with a clear and legal privacy policy (photos, documents, backups, contacts, messages, emails, search history, location history and so on -- they can literally see everything about you). So, why they should do something illegal ? And for what purpose ? People put all their life on a service which does not encrypt anything, and if police needs data they can ask google and Google will give data to them. No backdoor needed.

Now, i'm not defending Google, of course. I'm just saying, hardware wise (and if you think about using an alternative privacy oriented OS) Google Pixels are the best choice.

A lot more has to put regarding this topic, but i don't have time to give you more information, i'm sorry :(

I will link the GrapheneOS's FAQ: https://grapheneos.org/faq#supported-devices

TheHobbyist ,

I wish other companies would design phones with the requirements for GrapheneOS in addition to being repair friendly... But I'm daydreaming I guess.

Proton revealed information to the FBI without hesitation when they asked. I will not be using proton.

emzili ,

They can only reveal metadata since they keep everything encrypted, but that was enough to track down this person's Proton recovery email address? That's disconcerting.

Trying to use a commercial privacy service to threaten election officials is definitely some dumb shit though, but I bet they could have avoided that outcome with some better opsec

britishblaze ,

Yeah? Proton have always said they will comply with Swiss authorities for requests for metadata. Good luck finding any email provider that doesn't comply with it's home countries laws.
