d3Xt3r , in How do you handle your passwords?

if any one of my Windows or Android units got stolen and somehow cracked into or something.

This shouldn't be a concern if you're using disk encryption and secure passwords, which is generally the default behaviour on most systems these days.

On Android, you don't need to worry about anything as long as you've got a pin/password configured, as disk encryption has been enabled by default for like a decade now.

On Windows, if you're on the Pro/Enterprise edition, you can use Bitlocker, but if you're on Home, you can use "device encryption" (which is like a lightweight Bitlocker) - but that requires a TPM chip and your Windows user account linked to a Microsoft account. If that is not an option, you could use VeraCrypt instead, which is an opensource disk encryption tool. Another option, if you're on a laptop, could be Opal encryption (aka TCG Opal SED), assuming your drive/BIOS supports it.

TL;DR: Encrypt yo' shit, and you don't need to worry about your data if your device gets stolen.

bloodfart ,

do not do anything in this post until you have backups that you know run and work.

device encryption is fantastic.

Dymonika OP ,

I'm mortified to say I could certainly do more in this regard. Do you recommend a preferred method?

bloodfart ,

What matters is that the backups are done at the appropriate intervals and verified to be readable.

You can figure out what interval is appropriate. Some people have to make sure every picture is saved, some people are fine losing a month of stuff.

Verifying the backup is valid equally important. You don’t wanna find out it was misconfigured and didn’t get your user directories when you try to restore. Just open one up and look to see every once in a while.

At least fifteen years ago you could set up windows backups through the control panel > backup or something menu. Now on 10 it’s settings > updates and security > backups.

You can click add drive from there and designate a usb or something as your backup drive.

Then set an alarm to make sure you remember to do it at the designated interval.

With android the easiest thing is to sync it to a computer that gets backed up.

You can use cloud services instead of a hard drive too, but often simple and easy to understand is the best place to start.

Do you know why it’s important to have backups before using full disc encryption?

Dymonika OP ,

Right, I can imagine that I could lock myself out otherwise. Thanks for the walkthrough!

bloodfart ,

The lockout I see most often isn’t from people forgetting a password or key, but from motherboard failure with a key stored in the motherboards tpm or cpu.

Fake4000 , in Proton Pass open source password manager is now available on F-Droid

Proton is great but I do feel wary from putting all my eggs in one basket again.

anonymouse ,

Same, staying with bitwarden for now

Pechente ,

Bitwarden also has better features for now like more solid URL matching (handy if you have a bunch of services on subdomains of the same domain name).

keepassxc database synced with syncthing across devices

fine_sandy_bottom ,

This is the way OP. Centralised services are just too much a target for bad actors.

You already have syncthing so most of the way there.

Also built in TOTP / 2fa is pretty great.

shiftymccool ,

Also built in TOTP / 2fa is pretty great.

I can't wrap my head around how this is a good idea. Isn't the idea of mfa to protect against password theft? If your second factor is stored with your password, how does that help anything? Honest question, I see this everywhere but can't figure out why it's acceptable with security-minded folks

Kayana ,

Late reply, but for me personally, I started doing it because my Keepass database is already accessed using two factors (password and key file). Therefore, I'd gain very little by keeping the second factor of those sites external - essentially, those second factors are compounded into the second factor for the database.

tiny , in What do you use to backup files from your phone to Google Drive? Is there anything that can permanently delete the old files?

I self host seafile. Nextcloud and syncthing are also good options. There are people that sell hosted nextcloud and seafile

bookworm ,

@tiny
would you mind sharing those ppl?

tiny ,

Altispeed technologies sells both otherwise I'm not familiar with anyone else that does it since I self host

FatLegTed , in (Read before Comment) Why you don't like GIMP UI?
@FatLegTed@piefed.social avatar

Because the name begins with GIMP.

RayOfSunlight OP ,

That's not valid, personally i understand what it means to you since i made a small research because the auto Subtitles in Youtube do not show "GIMP", however, i need you to understand that GIMO stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program.

And no, Glimpse is an abandoned project.

FatLegTed ,
@FatLegTed@piefed.social avatar

I know what GIMP stands for. I've been using it since it came out.
If you're going to be pedantic at least spell it correctly and not GIMO.

I have no idea what Glimpse is.

Goodbye

That was a typo i didn't saw

Every time I install gimp in an attempt to switch over, I find myself frustrated that the tools I commonly use on other programs are not either available by default or unintuitive enough that 20 minutes of looking through tools, tabs, and menus has not provided the results I went looking for.

I try every few years, or every major update, whichever happens first.

RayOfSunlight OP ,

There are settings you can change to make the UI better for you, there's even a tutorial made by Davis Media Design that teaches how to make GIMP look like Photoshop CC 2020, alternatively, you can install the PhotoGIMP addon.

This topic actually prompted me to google the answer to the one thing I had been looking for only to find that the answer is completely obtuse and kind of misleading, which is why I wasn't able to find it on my own.

Mustard , in (Read before Comment) Why you don't like GIMP UI?

I remember when i first started using GIMP the thing that threw me the most was that there was no 'safe default' state that you could get to by pressing escape, like 'select' is for other programs.

If you think this is a small thing consider that escape/back is one of the only 3 default controls on phone UIs. It's super important and Gimp doesn't have it.

gandalf_der_12te , in (Read before Comment) Why you don't like GIMP UI?
@gandalf_der_12te@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

GIMP feels non-intuitive sometimes.

For example, layers.

I expect that GIMP internally has a list of all objects that I added to the file. Like, text, brush drawings, pasted images. Instead, I cannot find that list anywhere.

twei ,

That list is either the undo-menu or the layers themselves, as everything you do in GIMP is somewhat destructive. This behavior will be changed in GIMP 3 tho.

merthyr1831 , in (Read before Comment) Why you don't like GIMP UI?

UI is dated, for one.

range inputs can't be scrolled, dragged around the screen, and are absurdly small on high DPI screens.

There's a load of UX issues, such as how pasting content will create a new layer that is for some reason more limited than a typical layer.

Feature discoverability is poor. Most features are buried in years-old dropdown tabs that aren't kept up to date with UI/UX expectations.

Some features are incredibly obtuse in how they explain themselves: selecting a brush dynamic selects stuff from a massive scrolling list with nothing but a title to explain what they do.

UI is inconsistent. Some elements are clearly older than others even after ""recent"" (years-old) updates.

There's way more, btw. But honestly if this years-long push to get GIMP to GTK 3 has told me anything, it's that the project should've canned the update years ago and written an entirely new app from scratch, dropping the technical debt, the archaic choice of language and UI toolkit, and they still would've come out with a new version faster than they have now.

Hadriscus ,

How would writing an entire program be faster than upgrading an already fully functioning one ? I don't see the logic ?

Dariusmiles2123 , in Why the US government’s overreliance on Microsoft is a big problem

I guess so many countries are in the same position. Of course none of them is exactly in the same position, but almost every country is using Microsoft products.

To me this sounds crazy as you could have two enemies relying on the same company to provide an OS for them.

In a way, it would make sense for every country to have their own Linux distribution, tailored to their needs. I’ve only heard about India, some states in Germany doing this, but it seems like the perfect strategy.

My country is really regarding about what its employees are doing with the citizens data, but I guess they’re still relying on Microsoft to store all that data in many different countries.

I'm just looking through this entire thread, and call me crazy, OP, but you seem angry not more people are using GIMP. You're quite aggressive about it, attempting to shut down legitimate UI and UX concerns at every corner, and it is genuinely fatiguing to see.
