Thomas Willis (1621-1675) : Neurologist, Chemist, Physician

“Willis is not only credited to be the founder of neurology, but he is also seen as the father of comparative neuroanatomy, as his work, in particular Cerebri anatome and De anima brutorum, compare the human brain with that of other species in ‘search for specific human abilities in cognitive functions’ (Molnár, p. 334).”

But in all seriousness, did he, or others, consider Corvids when comparing "the human brain with that of other species in ‘search for specific human abilities in cognitive functions’"?

Re-enacting Memory: 9 years ago today. (2015 our prelude to Waterloo)

We were in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium as part of the Colours Ceremony for the Royal Welsh.

Photos are mine with the exception of the shot of the Queen on the ramp in the stadium which is from the stadium website.

I am on the right hand side, second up from the floor!

Origins of medieval coinage revealed

The implication is that Anglo-Saxon elites had access to significant quantities of Byzantine silver, something that dramatically alters our view of how economically and politically connected they were.

A United States of Europe

A free and unified Europe was first imagined by Italian radicals in the 19th century. Could we yet see their dream made real?

After the Second World War, Churchill became the greatest pioneer of the European ideal. “If I were 10 years younger,” he told his wife, “I might be the first President of the United States of Europe.”

Britain in Palestine 1917-1948

Britain in Palestine 1917-1948 investigates the contradictory promises and actions which defined British Mandatory rule in Palestine and laid the groundwork for the Nakba (the catastrophe) and the creation of the state of Israel in 1948. The roots of the contemporary social, political, economic, and environmental landscape of Palestine and Israel can be traced back to this period, making it essential viewing for understanding Britain’s legacy in the region and the situation on the ground today.

What is Fascism and Where does it Come From?

Fascism prospered from a paralysis of the state’s capacity for dispatching its key organizing functions, whether in the economy or for the larger tasks of keeping cohesion in society. At the worst points of the crisis, that paralysis encompassed the entire institutional machinery of politics, including the parliamentary and party-political frameworks of representation.

Re-enacting Memory: back to Waterloo 200.

Back in Hougoumont structure ready to welcome another wave of French.

The night before the walls were all nicely constructed. This night we did our best to reassemble some form of a defensive structure!
