LetMeEatCake , in Denuvo wants to convince you its DRM isn’t “evil”

What grinds my gears with all the people (whether Denuvo officials or elsewhere) that claim that it has no effect on performance: they only focus on average FPS. Never a consideration for FPS lows or FPS time spent on frames that took more than N milliseconds. Definitely not any look at loading times.

I'm willing to believe a good implementation of Denuvo has a negligible impact on average FPS. I think every time I saw anyone test loading times though, it had a clear and consistent negative impact. I've never seen anyone check FPS lows (or similar) but with the way Denuvo works I expect it's similar.

Performance is more than average framerate and they hide behind a veil of pretending that it is the totality of all performance metrics.

please, fandom is one of the worst sites on the internet

subtext ,

When the old school RuneScape wiki moved to a self hosted solution it was night and day the quality difference. I’d argue that OSRS (and probably regular RS) have some of the best wikis in gaming.

elbowdrop , in Official Minecraft wiki editors so furious at Fandom's 'degraded' functionality and popups they're overwhelmingly voting to leave the site

Going to Fandom is like visiting a annoying dying person because they hold the hidden information.

Photographer , in Official Minecraft wiki editors so furious at Fandom's 'degraded' functionality and popups they're overwhelmingly voting to leave the site

Stardew Valley did the right thing by self hosting a wiki, makes it both official and independent

Smokeless7048 ,

Several have, including the old school RuneScape wiki!

Now there's two, and one is far more content full

Can anyone speak on the state of this game? I've never been that curious about it but with all the additions of cult classic characters, I'm starting to get intrigued

queermunist , in 2023 might be the best year for sequels and worst for new IPs
@queermunist@lemmy.ml avatar

Also known as Hollywoodification.

antaymonkey , in Noooooo you can't make a microtransactions free game and finished too 😭😭😭

Uhh.. today's AAA studios have THOUSANDS of employees, hundreds of millions of dollars in budgets, and huge IPs on which to draw. Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Assassin's Creed, Diablo, Warcraft, Mass Effect, Dragon Age... these studios have VASTLY larger resources than Larian. Like, an order of magnitude larger. This is gaslighting and whining. I'm not having it. Do better, AAA devs. Do a lot better.

DreamySweet ,
@DreamySweet@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

That's why their games suck. Smaller teams and budgets make better products.

thepianistfroggollum ,

It's really not the team size, but rather the management that comes with it.

The devs aren't the problem 99% of the time.

amio , in The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion - 17-08-2023

Gave Baldur's Gate 3 a try, I don't think it's for me. I didn't realize before starting that I absolutely fucking hate that kind of RNG, the Mindflayer "aesthetic" (body horror á la HR Giger-on-some-less-friendly-hallucinogenics? Check. Eye scream? Check. ), the threat of having content locked behind "lol, fuck you, you got the wrong dice roll hours ago", and, under the hood, a bunch of spreadsheet-esque mechanics I don't know jack about, never having played DnD.

Shame, seems like a lot of fun if you're into it.

dom ,

I save scum in this play through, but I dont intend to on the next one. Part of the magic is that the game adapts to your bad dice rolls. Just because you succeeded a roll doesn't mean it's the "good" option. It's just a different one.

And the eye horror stuff is really only in the intro (although I'm only 20 hours in so it may come up later)

BlinkAndItsGone , in The Weekly 'What are you playing?' Discussion - 17-08-2023

Returnal (PC) - Still playing the Tower of Sisyphus even though I beat the game. This is the most impressed I've been with a Playstation "exclusive" since the PS2, it's so good. I bet a lot of people give up on it pretty quick because of the difficulty, but I find it's less difficult than a Souls game once you get a handle on it.

Horizon Zero Dawn (PC) - I kinda want to get to the part where they explain the robot animals (Dr. Eggman?), but the half-assed combat and boring open world are making me not want to bother.

20XX (PC)- It's fun, but it's also giving me a new appreciation for how well-designed the Mega Man games were. You're not supposed to be hitting your head on the bottoms of platforms in games like this, lmao.

hairinmybellybutt , in Todd Howard asked on-air why Bethesda didn't optimise Starfield for PC: 'We did [...] you may need to upgrade your PC'

I'm a game developer and I'm ashamed by this.

When chip production will halt because of the climate, you will see programmers optimizing their code again.

Jeez I hope this economy crashes.

Knusper , in PSA: If you still have a Mojang account for Minecraft: Java Edition, you have less than a week left to migrate to a Microsoft account to avoid profile deletion

For anyone left behind, Minetest is a community-developed alternative.

It's more of a game engine/launcher + highly moddable, so the base game is rather minimalistic, but you can simply install more extensive games. For example, for a very Minecraft-like experience, MineClone2 is your best bet.

Melatonin , in PSA: If you still have a Mojang account for Minecraft: Java Edition, you have less than a week left to migrate to a Microsoft account to avoid profile deletion

This is bullshit. What could it possibly matter to them, other than to force people onto their miserable platform. Bastards.

Pxtl ,

Authentication servers do not run themselves, they need babysitting and patching and upgrading because this is users' passwords and secrets. Microsoft obviously does not want to keep managing this old login system because it's miserable unrewarding janitorial work for a sysadmin or a developer.

beefcat ,
@beefcat@lemmy.world avatar

They don’t want to hire people to build and maintain a secure login platform when their parent company already has one. This is way more work and liability than most people realize.

darthelmet , in Terraria developer bashes Unity, donates $200k to open source alternatives

It's crazy how successful they've been off just making and selling a good indie game. They're still doing free updates AND they can afford a $200k donation?

funnystuff97 ,

Terraria is like the anti-modern game. They absolutely refuse to evilly monetize their game at all. The playerbase is almost on their knees, begging them to move on from Terraria and make something else (not because Terraria is bad, but they've been at it for over a decade!) and they continue to churn out updates. The fanbase voted for a set of features to appear in Terraria 2, which they then turned around and scrapped, and added it as an update to Terraria. And all their updates are always free. And can't forget about their amazing mod support.

And redigit is just, like, the man.
