How many communities do you have blocked?

My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)

I accidentally blocked a community while trying to block a user and when I went to unblock it, I saw I had 1250 communities filtered. If I had to guess, 90% are either porn, sports, or anime.

What about you?

A lot, I've blocked all political, non-english, and anime communities that show up

eldavi ,

getting a challenge to your world views can be healthy; i hope you enjoy your echo chamber

glimse OP ,

Uhh that's why I browse All, my dude.

But thanks to your obnoxious comment, I now understand that sports, porn, and anime are a "worldview" and I'm unhealthy for blocking them. You are right, my life would be better if I knew that the Dodgers were trading Jimmy McBaseball. Not sure how I lived without seeing hardcore anal porn or Generic Anime on my feed every day

antidote101 ,

28, all the gay porn, yiff/furry, and male anatomy ones that I've caught while browsing c/all.

glimse OP ,

Does the app you use let you block posts from an instance while not blocking the comments? If so, something to consider for yiffit.

KillingTimeItself ,

the yiffit users out in the wild are the funniest ones to me.

card797 ,

If a community has reddit in the title. I block.

glimse OP ,

Don't want to see people bitch about a site you don't use eh?

3volver ,

I blocked /c/unpopularopinion after they deleted one of my posts, shut down the sublemmy, and then re-opened it with the rule "NO POLITICS".

Meanwhile, the top fucking post is "I think people in prison should be allowed to vote".

This is the type of shit guys.

glimse OP ,

That community, as well as the subreddit it came from, is a dumpster fire. It'd 99% bait or popular opinions.

I do agree with their no politics stance, though. There's 473773 communities to argue politics on already

3volver ,

Unpopular opinion with no politics is like having an art subreddit which only allows images of blank white painted walls. Boring as fuck.

glimse OP ,

Eh I disagree unless you use the right wing definition of which is "politics is politics plus anything I don't like"

There's a ton of fun stuff to argue about.

3volver ,

I just personally don't care to discuss trivial nonsense. Who gives a shit if someone likes their toast to be burnt?

glimse OP ,

It's just a conversation starter. The comments in those posts about weird opinions can be pretty funny

The subreddit is really shit though. I've had posts removed where it wasn't political, but got removed because "UHHHH IT NO AN UNPOPULAR OPINION! UHHH!!"

When, just gazing at the front page of the subreddit, you'll find dozens of shit that were allowed to be posted that contradicts the entire meaning of the subreddit itself at every second.

The problem is that the moderators just cannot handle it when someone truly has something spicy of an unpopularopinion to express that isn't gender, race or politically related.

Ephera ,

492, apparently. Mostly bot communities, (US) politics, anime and tons of communities for specific sports teams, TV shows, games, technologies etc..

glimse OP ,

Well another commenter just told me that blocking sports and anime is equivalent to an echo chamber so we both better unblock them to have a healthier worldview /s

I forgot about the game subs in my estimate...I've got a lot of those blocked. I just don't care about patch notes for games I don't play.

getseclectic , (edited )

I exclusively browse All and have blocked 615 communities and 2 instances.

Is there a way to block non English content? The last time I looked into this, you could choose to only see English content, but that would also filter out all content which didn't have a language specified. This made the filtering unviable because most content doesn't specify the language and most content is in English.

glimse OP ,

I set my language and don't see a lot of non-English communities but I'm not sure if those two things are related. I don't mind filtering them out, it's no more than a couple per week

AFKBRBChocolate ,

You can choose both English and "unspecified." You'll still see some non-English stuff when people don't set the language, but it will filter out all of the posts where the language is set to something else.

getseclectic ,

Thanks, will try that!

laverabe ,

over 30. I personally prefer more serious discussion because I'm a dork. I'm not into most sports, jokes, video games or other whimsical stuff. I like some of that stuff IRL, but I consider the internet primarily of use for deeper discussion of topics that most people might not necessarily have an interest in. Like NASAs nuclear powered project Orion spacecraft in the 1960s.

Peoples eyes normally glaze over when I talk about that stuff offline, but there are billions online, and usually someone else finds that niche stuff as interesting as me.

It would be nice if you could select which topics interest you rather than having to block every community that does not.

glimse OP ,

Niche communities are what makes the internet great.

It would be nice if you could select which topics interest you rather than having to block every community that does not.

I mean you kinda can do exactly that through subscriptions. Sub to the places you like and browse your main feed instead of All

SquiffSquiff ,

700 at last count

I block all communities based around a single sports team and most sports, also any based around a geographic location smaller than national-level. Anything based around a state, city, town etc is always negative.

glimse OP ,

I kinda like those regional communities for some reason!

BonesOfTheMoon ,

No communities, but I blocked the whole Lemmy NSFW instance because I am not into porn and autoplay GIFs in my feed is not to my liking. (you all do you I just don't care for it).

Legend , (edited )

I too browse like you and have blocked too much communities to keep track of .

Thought there would be more. But I block em as I see em.

The irony about "enough musk spam" is they're the ones spamming the most.

glimse OP ,

The second-to-last one made me actually laugh out loud. What the fuck is that title lol

Aboringdystopia is one of those communities that doesn't resemble its namesake at all. The subreddit had rules to match the theme but the Lemmy equivalent is just the same news articles of shitty things happening that appear on all the other news communities. They're so lax about what constitutes "a boring dystopia," it feels so lazy to me

Ephera ,

From what I've heard, that was the idea behind the Enough Musk Spam community, that the spam could be posted there and people could block it.
But yeah, it's a bit counterintuitive...

3, i don't remember why i blocked them

  1. !Risa
  2. !Entomology
  3. !Science_Memes
glimse OP ,

You probably blocked Risa for the same reason I did....wayyyyyy too many posts. It was half my feed before I blocked it.

Science_memes is basically just a generic meme sub and is very close to hitting my blocklist for the same reason

Entomology...I don't even have a guess. Are you grossed out by bugs, maybe?

lil ,
@lil@lemy.lol avatar

You are very good at guessing

Trollception ,

I try to block communities discussing politics, cringe memes and Linux. I have about 50 blocked at the moment.

psion1369 ,

You can block communities?

glimse OP ,

Yes. Not sure what app you use but for me I click the dots in the corner of a post and pick Block Community and Block User

Hadriscus ,

It works on Jerboa
