How many communities do you have blocked?

My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)

I accidentally blocked a community while trying to block a user and when I went to unblock it, I saw I had 1250 communities filtered. If I had to guess, 90% are either porn, sports, or anime.

What about you?

glimse OP ,

Whatcha got on there?

Asidonhopo ,
@Asidonhopo@lemmy.world avatar

Porn, anime, sports, a bunch of video games I don't play, and some spammy or obnoxious communities too. Oh, and foreign languages I don't speak (until we get built-in translation)

pruwybn ,
@pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Just 5 - 3 from hexbear, 1 quasi NSFW that keeps popping up (I have NSFW turned off), and the Far Side one because they're a lot less funny and more boomer humor than I remember.

glimse OP ,

I get you but I disagree about Far Side because it's almost entirely wholesome. Boomer humor is comics complaining about social issues or how awful your wife is

AFKBRBChocolate ,

Boomer humor is comics complaining about social issues or how awful your wife is

As opposed to humor boomers actually like...

glimse OP ,

Boomer humor is not all humor that boomers like. It's humor that was primarily popular in their era - like "I hate my wife" jokes fit because don't really play well anymore

AFKBRBChocolate ,

My point is that lots and lots of us didn't really love that kind of stuff at the time. It's just that those kinds of jokes stand out, along with race jokes, because they've aged so badly.

glimse OP ,

It must suck to be a "normal" boomer in the internet getting lumped in with the shitheads of your demographic. Hell...you're the ones who pushed the civil rights movement.

It's a shame your generation (not you specifically, of course) fucked the world up to the point that every generation after you looks back in disgust and doesn't even consider the things you did right.

AFKBRBChocolate ,

What sucks is that people attribute stuff like that to the whole generation; we get painted broadly as very right wing conservatives who are against any social programs. But look at things like the age demographics of the last couple presidential elections. Yes, you'll see that more older people voted conservative than liberal, but not by a large margin. You'll also see that, though more younger folks voted liberal, that margin wasn't huge either. And in our society, it's not unusual for folks to get more conservative as they get older (the opposite for me personally, but it's often true), so it won't be surprising if younger folks today vote more conservatively when they're older.

Huge hunks of boomers are fighting for equal rights for all people, are big proponents of social programs that help those who are disadvantaged, advocate for universal healthcare, and all sorts of other progressive issues. Large numbers of younger people are against those things. The fact that total numbers might tip one way or another doesn't change that, and applying a stereotype to millions of people is always wrong.

glimse OP ,

I think it's really the policies pushed by the politicians that your generation voted in that led to the boomer hate. My generation will surely be remembered for Trump just like yours for Reagan

AFKBRBChocolate ,

Okay, but there were go again. Remember that the oldest boomers were in their mid 30s when Regan was first elected. Take a look at these demographics. Boomers were the ones mostly voting for Carter.

glimse OP ,

Sorry I think we're on the same page here, my generation is largely anti-trump but we're going to be remembered for voting him in. I was trying to draw the comparison of falsely placed blame.

AFKBRBChocolate ,

I understand, and I didn't mean to come off too strong, but you have no idea how many times I've seen people in these communities saying that all boomers are horrible, some even going so far as to say that the world would be better if we were all dead. Unironically. Can you image the backlash if someone said that about any other demographic? A gender? A race? It gets a bit frustrating to be worse than dismissed because of the year I was born, regardless of the fact that I'm a pretty progressive liberal on the same side as most of the people doing the dismissing.

avguser ,

My blocked community list got significantly shorter when they introduced instance blocking. Got pretty tired of playing furry porn community whackamole.

glimse OP ,

I have 7 instances blocked. I'm really glad that you can block instances while not blocking the users of those instances. Like I don't want to see any posts from yiffit but being a furry doesn't mean your comments aren't worth reading, ya know?

The other blocked instances are porn and language-specific instances just to clean up my feed

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

I would love it if blocking all users from an inatance was available as a separate option from the users. I think the majority of my blocked users are from two instances.

viking ,
@viking@infosec.pub avatar

Hexbear and lemmy.ml?

snooggums ,
@snooggums@midwest.social avatar

Yes, those two.

barsquid ,

The fact that you can so easily guess which two instances proves it would be a useful tool to be able to block all their users.

korny , (edited )

Good to know! I didn't want to miss out on @kolanaki comments, but now I won't have to worry about it.

Donut ,

I did. Those usernames are too distracting and shout "look at me!", so I'm filtering all of them.

glimse OP ,

I totally agree. Before I found the option to disable custom display names, I found that guy insufferable...2024 equivalent of xXxUSERNAMExXx. I don't think I've noticed him since, though I'm sure I've read his comments

simple ,
@simple@lemm.ee avatar

I'm this close to blocking ani.social as well because it's mostly softcore porn. I like Anime, but not like this.

glimse OP ,

I added that one fast for the same reason. I am not an anime-hater but there's way too much horny anime getting posted for my liking. Too many -chan characters that look basically identical middle schoolers.

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

Got pretty tired of playing furry porn community whackamole.

Coincidentally, the furry porn whack-off-a-mole community is not very popular.

Enkers ,

Be the change you want to see. (:

Vex_Detrause ,

I'm gonna need a list of these ridiculous communities. You know, to block them. /S

HubertManne ,

Im on kbin and it does not show a total but I block anything in languages I don't know or that seems to be all memes or sports related but certainly not anime or porn.

glimse OP ,

Since you're an anime enjoyer, I have a question: do you ever find that there's a lack of variety in the art styles? I was pretty into it in the 90s/2000s but it seems like there's a new anime every week that looks identical to the one before it

HubertManne ,

Yes but I think thats a bit the same with all media. There is still tons of relatively recent anime that is really unique like attack on titan or To Your Eternity or even spy family.

glimse OP ,

I saw the first two seasons of AoT and liked it a lot. It has a well-defined art style. My only "complaint" is that I had a hard time telling a few characters apart

Do you know the word/name for the art style I described in my other comment? I call it "kawaii anime" but I know that's not right lol

HubertManne ,

Im sorta a poser when it comes to fandom. I like stuff but I don't have the obsession that drives really getting into a lot of details. So I totally don't know are styles and such. Its sorta like museums. I like to go and I like what I like but I don't necessarily have great depth of knowledge of art style or periods or such. Its only due to memes that I know the getting sucked into a fantasy world has a name and I can't even recall that atm. I mean I could google it right now but I just don't care much that the particular term is X but if someone mentions it in a convo I will likely remember that what they are talking about with context clues. im thinking its like ikea with an s somewhere and i or something.

glimse OP ,

IKEA anime actually works really well for what I'm describing lol

Not necessarily bad but it is bland and unoriginal. The main difference for this analogy is that I wouldn't consider IKEA to be childlike

HubertManne ,

lol. not my intention but cool. Maybe it will become a thing.

RememberTheApollo_ ,

About 330. A crap ton of porn stuff, furry, bondage, etc. Several non-English communities. Operating system related stuff like Linux or android. A few “normal” communities that are on instances that don’t allow much dissent or contrary opinion.

3volver ,

I blocked /c/unpopularopinion after they deleted one of my posts, shut down the sublemmy, and then re-opened it with the rule "NO POLITICS".

Meanwhile, the top fucking post is "I think people in prison should be allowed to vote".

This is the type of shit guys.

glimse OP ,

That community, as well as the subreddit it came from, is a dumpster fire. It'd 99% bait or popular opinions.

I do agree with their no politics stance, though. There's 473773 communities to argue politics on already

3volver ,

Unpopular opinion with no politics is like having an art subreddit which only allows images of blank white painted walls. Boring as fuck.

glimse OP ,

Eh I disagree unless you use the right wing definition of which is "politics is politics plus anything I don't like"

There's a ton of fun stuff to argue about.

3volver ,

I just personally don't care to discuss trivial nonsense. Who gives a shit if someone likes their toast to be burnt?

glimse OP ,

It's just a conversation starter. The comments in those posts about weird opinions can be pretty funny

snownyte ,
@snownyte@kbin.social avatar

The subreddit is really shit though. I've had posts removed where it wasn't political, but got removed because "UHHHH IT NO AN UNPOPULAR OPINION! UHHH!!"

When, just gazing at the front page of the subreddit, you'll find dozens of shit that were allowed to be posted that contradicts the entire meaning of the subreddit itself at every second.

The problem is that the moderators just cannot handle it when someone truly has something spicy of an unpopularopinion to express that isn't gender, race or politically related.

Asudox Mod ,
@Asudox@lemmy.world avatar

Zero. I don't need to block communities as I only browse subscriptions.

Mellow12 ,

I do the same thing. I use all as my home page so I can see new and interesting stuff.

I tend to block most 'ism and 'ism-adjacent communities, Foreign language communities, political communities, NSFW/Fetish, and a few highly specific tech/app/language communities that mostly only post version updates.

Bots. lots of bots. If your community is 90% bot posts/repost aggregation and I see 5-10 posts consecutively in 'all' because your bot just vomited up it's entire load in a 120 second span then I'll probably block it.

  • 8 Keywords (Voyager app feature)
  • 186 Users.
  • 964 Communities.
  • 38 Instances.
glimse OP ,

There's way too many communities consisting solely of bots reposting from the subreddit of the same name. I do not understand why anyone would want that. There's rarely comments

Ephera ,

Leaving a comment feels weird, too. There's not even an OP to talk to, so it's like shouting into the void.

In principle, I do get the need for these communities. Like, if you just want capybara pictures to show up in your feed, then you don't need many comments on those.
But these bots usually spit out far too many posts for my liking, so more often than not, I do block them anyways.

glimse OP ,

Bot-driven communities feel like ads as opposed to communities with bots that post, say, game patch notes automatically. I want there to be a reason something is posted other than to fill a void

SquiffSquiff ,

700 at last count

I block all communities based around a single sports team and most sports, also any based around a geographic location smaller than national-level. Anything based around a state, city, town etc is always negative.

glimse OP ,

I kinda like those regional communities for some reason!

Rikj000 ,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Only these 2:

Because they:

  • Spam up your feed
  • Spread depressing content (since it attracts more attention thus earns them more)
  • Try to manipulate you
Bo7a , (edited )

Earns them more what? There are no ads here unless you locked yourself into an app that pushes them.

Rikj000 ,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Each article,
links to a news site,
which is riddled with data trackers,
which collects info about you,
which is sold.

In addition the sites contain advertisements.

Bo7a ,

The 'them' in your first comment was pretty obviously about the lemmy admins on those servers profiting from doom scrolling. Now you are talking about "news" sites selling your data.

This sounds like something you made up to not be wrong. It is ok to be wrong. Just incorporate the new info and move on.

Rikj000 ,
@Rikj000@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

How do you think news sites earn money?
They do not provide that content for free,
you are their product of which they benefit.

I use NoScript,
which tells me about each JavaScript piece a website has, most if not all of them contain trackers (= data collection).

Ephera ,

Or you guys just misunderstood each other. It is ok to misunderstand each other once in a while. No one needs to be declare right or wrong for this interaction.

Bo7a ,

Fair enough. Cheers,

A lot, I've blocked all political, non-english, and anime communities that show up

laverabe ,

over 30. I personally prefer more serious discussion because I'm a dork. I'm not into most sports, jokes, video games or other whimsical stuff. I like some of that stuff IRL, but I consider the internet primarily of use for deeper discussion of topics that most people might not necessarily have an interest in. Like NASAs nuclear powered project Orion spacecraft in the 1960s.

Peoples eyes normally glaze over when I talk about that stuff offline, but there are billions online, and usually someone else finds that niche stuff as interesting as me.

It would be nice if you could select which topics interest you rather than having to block every community that does not.

glimse OP ,

Niche communities are what makes the internet great.

It would be nice if you could select which topics interest you rather than having to block every community that does not.

I mean you kinda can do exactly that through subscriptions. Sub to the places you like and browse your main feed instead of All

card797 ,

If a community has reddit in the title. I block.

glimse OP ,

Don't want to see people bitch about a site you don't use eh?

Ephera ,

492, apparently. Mostly bot communities, (US) politics, anime and tons of communities for specific sports teams, TV shows, games, technologies etc..

glimse OP ,

Well another commenter just told me that blocking sports and anime is equivalent to an echo chamber so we both better unblock them to have a healthier worldview /s

I forgot about the game subs in my estimate...I've got a lot of those blocked. I just don't care about patch notes for games I don't play.

eldavi ,

getting a challenge to your world views can be healthy; i hope you enjoy your echo chamber

glimse OP ,

Uhh that's why I browse All, my dude.

But thanks to your obnoxious comment, I now understand that sports, porn, and anime are a "worldview" and I'm unhealthy for blocking them. You are right, my life would be better if I knew that the Dodgers were trading Jimmy McBaseball. Not sure how I lived without seeing hardcore anal porn or Generic Anime on my feed every day
