use TrustDevice to check. it's open source and also in the IzzyOnDroid Fdroid repo

There are apps in the store that claim they can show you your ID. Why don’t you try one, and see what permissions it comes with? I don’t think you can install a privileged app directly so this would be a useful test.

Check Out QuickStar in Samsung GoodLock, maybe you can customize the clock in the way you want. I can't say sure, but it gave me some options (for AM/PM at least) I can use that is not neccessairly match my regional settings.

Maybe it has more options for more special regions in this case.

Rentlar , in Changing date display system without changing language

Hmm, I have no clue how to get JUST the date format to show a certain way, whether it's 月火水木金土日, MTWTFSS, LMMJVSD, and pick very specific parts of the locale like that. Is using the "Japanese" way common in some regions in China?

Perhaps related is getting dates to display like 19 June 2024, June 19 2024 or 2024/06/19 without changing your region?

PhantomFunds OP ,

I dont know about mainland China using the seven luminaries as im an American born Hong Konger but as to the reason for me wanting to use it, it basically just boils down to "I like it" / I watch too much anime.

You talked about
"Perhaps related is getting dates to display like 19 June 2024, June 19 2024 or 2024/06/19 without changing your region?"
Could you leave a link to where I can find that setting specifically, I think ive seen that before but I cant find it at the moment.

Rentlar ,

I haven't encountered such a setting on android myself but perhaps some have and I suggested as a good starting point to ask around on the topic.

limerod , in Is Whatsapp buggy/slow nowadays?

I guess you need to do a reinstallation. I do not experience this issue.

GamerBoy705 , in Is Whatsapp buggy/slow nowadays?

I don't try to mess with their cloud backup scheme, I import the local backups manually instead. Their cloud backup is so slow and their chat transfer feature is so buggy.

Achyu OP ,

I used the local backup option.

voracread ,

How did you use it? They no longer allow restoring from local backup AFAIK?

Achyu OP ,

Did it almost 2 weeks ago.

Automatic local backup did not happen, so I used Settings -> Chat -> Chat Backup -> Backup now

I don't have a google account selected in the backup options and the local backup was created.

I've been thinking about reinstalling whatsapp once more, but now even when I click it, it's not backing up.
So maybe it's not allowed now

voracread ,

I think they do create a local backup for uploading to Google but do not restore from local backup.

voracread ,

They no longer allow local backup.

GamerBoy705 ,

They do, but they don't explicitly allow restoring from local backups directly within the app anymore. However, if you manually move the backups to a new phone or whatever and then fresh install WhatsApp on that phone, you will be prompted to restore messages from the local backup that's present.

voracread ,

No it does not do it now. Only option is cloud restore. I have done it last week.

GamerBoy705 ,

So did I, about 2 weeks ago, for my dad. It worked. It's unlikely that anything changed in a week

voracread ,

Have you checked the official website of WhatsApp? You can only restore local backups if you are on older Android versions. On newer Androids it is only Google backup.

https://faq.whatsapp.com/6181521285295518/?helpref=hc_fnav&cms_platform=android
Nowhere will you find reference to local backup other than this. And my experience confirms it.

You might have succeeded because you and I might have been part of A/B testing but this is going to be the future.

GamerBoy705 ,

Maybe that's it. My dad's current phone does run an old Android version, so that might be why local backup restore worked. The WhatsApp version was up to date though. I can confirm local backups work on Android 8 and Android 11.

limerod , in Android 14 Apps Run Forever, why?

In android 14 most apps background apps are frozen in memory. Just because you see a force stop button doesn't mean its actually doing any work or consuming batttery.

Android does memory and battery management on its own. You also get some options to further restrict apps should you desire but that may break some apps.

avidamoeba , (edited ) in Android 14 Apps Run Forever, why?
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

Apps don't necessarily stop running unless you do Force Stop. It's always been this way.

In addition, swiping apps away in order to stop them has always been counterproductive on Android. Not only because it doesn't necessarily stop all of the app components, but also because it wastes resources. Android will stop apps as needed when memory is needed. In all other cases it will maximize memory usage in order to minimize CPU and IO making things faster. Stopping apps is only useful in special circumstances like killing a misbehaving app, etc.

You could limit per-app background usage since Android something, but even then it doesn't matter if you close them from the app list. Shortly after the all is no longer in the foreground, it will stop running, all of its components. It might still be possible for it to wake up now and then but for the majority of the time it wouldn't run.

Max_P , in Android 14 Apps Run Forever, why?
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

What makes you think it's not really closed?

Just because it shows the Force Stop button doesn't mean it's running, merely that at least one of its components is loaded. That can be just about anything. I have apps I know for a fact cannot run in the background that shows the force stop button.

Mainly, it boils down to battery management and the Android architecture. Android apps are very modular, so the Java class for handling push notifications might be loaded but none of its screens or other services would be loaded and it uses negligible amounts of memory. It's way more battery efficient than reloading it from storage, and if the system needs memory it'll clear some caches.

Fake4000 , in Android 14 Apps Run Forever, why?

Seems like an application specific thing.

I run android 14 and I only get this on certain apps (gmscore for example).

gila , in How do I fix this?
@gila@lemm.ee avatar

Looks like a notification bar. Just a wild guess, but maybe there's an invisible notification causing it to auto-display. If so, you might be able to fix it by limiting notifications for the app.

ser , in How would/do you backup before a factory reset?

You can use bitwarden for passwords.

Sync what you can based on your threat model.

I backup what I can into a folder and then sync that to my backup drive.
There are no way to backup app preferences without root.

Achyu OP ,

Thank you.

Dirk , in How would/do you backup before a factory reset?
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

Isn’t it that all of what you want to back up already is backed up via the Google cloud? (Except sideloaded APKs)

Achyu OP ,

I'm trying to avoid cloud, if possible.
