@actuallyautistic Wish more YouTubers and content creators added a toggle to their videos that could switch off background music. Idk about y'all, but so many videos have added music that is unnecessary, distracting, and overstimulating.

I have seen videos on YouTube where the closed captions settings have been programmed with a separate audio track with no commentary, so I know it can be done! Would probably be so helpful for so many people!

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic Hear, hear! I bitch about this a fair bit myself, too. I even emailed a complaint to YT two weeks ago, asking for an easy way to make background music optional. I sometimes complain directly to creators, but there's only been one that removed the music after that, and she's autistic. ND creators just ignore me completely, or say they appreciate the feedback but then do nothing about it. Sometimes I wonder if a campaign to leave a lot of feedback on videos would help, but it doesn't seem likely.

@chevalier26 I wish some more content creator also manually create subtitles. YouTube can do a decent job at it but it won't detect all the words.

Just asking as someone that is thinking about making YouTube video, what the worst aspect of background music and is having more calmer and quieter one be better or still be somewhat distracting for you?

@matty @actuallyautistic Usually background music doesn't bother me unless it's an overused song (like in Instagram reels, TikToks, YouTube shorts, etc.). Quiet, calm music in long-form videos is great and sometimes even preferable to no music at all in certain scenarios.

But yeah I think the short-form content having overused background music is what annoys me. It's completely unnecessary but is added in as a way to farm views and likes.

@matty For me its because auditory processing disorder. It’s very hard for me to understand when there is a background music, whatever kind.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic which content producers do you like? Some of them could probably produce two versions im guessing. I talk to a few of them I can ask. It’s mostly a few minutes extra to make the changes I 🤔

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic A lot of the autistic YouTubers I watch already create content with no background music.

Other than that, I don't think there are any specific YouTubers, but generally a lot of gaming and reaction video/commentary content includes a lot of background music.

Most of the time it doesn't bother me (like if it's quiet piano music), but if it's overly loud it can start to grate my nerves.

@chevalier26 @actuallyautistic For me I just want to overlay my own music etc that I use for everyday life to other audio like having a single earbud in that helps w/ me process and flow. I know how to do this with a laptop but not my phone .😉

@EVDHmn @actuallyautistic For example, Chris from the channel Chris and Debby does a great job of making "no music" versions of his videos, like this one: https://youtu.be/87CO8ldUv3I?si=iVgKRDVw1g5_Jgr3
