@actuallyautistic#actuallyautistic Does anyone else find that their music taste is extremely unconventional? I can enjoy most types of music with others, but when I'm alone I listen to stuff that most people would never listen to. Like historical folk songs, military marches, courtly dance music, sea shanties, etc.
I enjoy other music too but I feel like the above categories are things I am "ashamed" to play around others. Idk if that makes sense lol.
@chevalier26@actuallyautistic I mostly listen to electronica, but some of my musical tastes outside of that is stuff I don't play around other people. I love those remixes of...I guess meme content? My old SoundCloud is full of stuff like this:
@tkk13909@actuallyautistic I just did this Obscurify thing and it gave me a 93% rating, and I use Spotify pretty frequently 😂 not sure how accurate it is though
Almost half of my "most obscure" list are songs from Mannheim Steamroller, which I thought was pretty mainstream. At least, their Christmas tunes are. Hmm.
@chevalier26@actuallyautistic I love all sorts of music and am a musician, but I don't have a favorite song or a favorite band, and I listen to all sorts of things -- but only on my terms! One day it could be Motörhead and the next day it could be Tchaikovsky. And yes, I will autistically ask my smart speaker to play a song that makes me happy over and over again until I am satisfied.
@chevalier26@actuallyautistic Yes - not in exactly the same way, but in that I can't answer the question "what kind of music do you like?" What I actually like is This Song and That Song and The Other Song, and those three are all the music I need right now, until one of them changes. But they might all be from different genres and have apparently nothing in common. I don't generally try to explain this at all but just say I'm not really into music.
@Autisticaurochs@actuallyautistic Yes!! One of the things I've struggled with for a long time is how to answer any "what is your favorite ___?" questions because any and every form of media that I've ever seen immediately crosses my mind. Recently found out that when NT people ask this, they want a surface level response 🙃
@chevalier26@actuallyautistic
Absolutely. My tastes include Irish and Scottish traditional folk music (Or “trad” as it’s now called). I'm in the US!
Also English and maritime to a degree. I shook my head when The Wellerman went viral and everybody was calling it “The Shanty.” People, please, there are TONS of sea shanties out there. One of my all time favorites is “Barrett's Privateers”
@felyashono@actuallyautistic That's awesome! I don't know if you're familiar with Alastair McDonald or not, but his renditions of folk songs from the Jacobite Rebellion in the album "Bonnie Prince Charlie" are phenomenal.
Some of my favorites are Ye Jacobites By Name, Cam Ye O'er Frae France, and Charlie Is My Darlin'!
Also...The Wellerman gets on my nerves so bad! I feel your pain lol.
@homelessjun@actuallyautistic There was this weird moment in my Medieval Experience class this past semester where the professor played the Agincourt Carol, and I was enthralled, but everyone else was complaining and holding their ears. I thought, FINALLY, y’all are experiencing what I experience every time I turn on the radio!
@chevalier26@homelessjun@actuallyautistic I sometimes turn on the radio and tune to a pop station just to hear what the masses are listening to. It always disappoints.
