Reason 42,343,648 why allistic people shouldn't be allowed to create forms.

"Name of person whose certificate you're requesting"

So um, if the person is filling out a name change form, do they put the current LEGAL name of the person OR the old name that's being changed?

I assume old name, but that's ALSO a false statement on something I'm about to sign, & have notarized as being a TRUE statement, because it's NOT that person's name.

100% serious:
Someone should start a business where you get on a zoom call with an allistic person, share your screen, and they explain to you WTF these stupid forms want from us so that we don't spend the rest of the day spoonless & wanting to cry from trying to navigate this nonsensical 🐄💩

Obviously they'd have to be trained in how autistic folks see the world + some empathy training because most folks think we're being dramatic or that we shouldn't be struggling.

@masukomi @actuallyautistic Can we get this for job interviews, too, please? 🙏

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@Rana @actuallyautistic man, even allistic people need that for job interviews.

"what's your most significant negative quality?" No-one knows what the right answer to that is. You tell the truth you'll never get the job. You like and... well you're lying in an interview.

"why do you want to work here?" The answer is obviously "because you're offering money & that keeps the roof over my head & food on my plate" but that's also obviously NOT the answer.

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

"If you keep asking these questions, not in this company."

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

"Well, we both know the average turnaround is 1.5 years in this industry, you're an at-will employer, & layoffs are rampant so definitely not here."

@vger @masukomi @Rana @actuallyautistic

"Where do you see yourself in five years?"

I was asked that during a job interview once. I answered, "Happy."

The hiring manager immediately stopped the interview, "Thank you for your time," and escorted me out the building. Needless to say I didn't get the job. That spoke volumes.

vger ,
@vger@fidget.place avatar

@peteorrall @masukomi @Rana @actuallyautistic Well, the only good thing I can see in this is that you probably wouldn‘t have enjoyed your time there anyway. How awful 😕

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@vger @peteorrall @Rana @actuallyautistic

Yeah, that’s an awesome answer that everyone should strive for. Of course he probably assumed you meant that you were NOT happy now, which regardless, if it’s true or not, is not what you said.

I do understand not wanting to work with someone who is regularly talking about how miserable they are, but this isn’t that

Imagine entering psychology because you want to help people, and going out of school as a corporate gatekeeper.

@peteorrall @vger @masukomi @Rana @actuallyautistic I haven't heard that one in a long time. Did they also do the "what's your greatest weakness?"

Rana ,
@Rana@mastodon.nl avatar

@LastContinue @actuallyautistic @masukomi @vger @peteorrall I wouldn't be able to name a single weakness of mine that isn't in some way disruptive
They're all disruptive 😭

LastContinue ,
@LastContinue@labyrinth.zone avatar

@Rana @actuallyautistic @masukomi @vger @peteorrall

Well luckily that question is out of favor now a days because to the surprise no one except the people asking it people bullshit their way through it! (You mean job interviews are a performance???)

“My greatest weakness? I’m so good at my job, I make others feel insecure”

peteorrall ,
@peteorrall@universeodon.com avatar

@LastContinue @actuallyautistic @masukomi @vger @Rana

Yes I was asked that question during that interview, along with all the other bullshit interview questions.

One of them was to test my attention to detail. It was a poorly designed exercise that had zero real world application. Being the pathologically honest human that I am, I had no qualms about pointing that out to this hiring manager along with ways to actually test someone's attention to detail that was relevant to the job. Undoubtedly that was one of the reasons why I was escorted out of the building. 🤣

@peteorrall @actuallyautistic @masukomi @vger @Rana Oh yeah first rule of an interview is “Never break Kayfabe”

vger ,
@vger@fidget.place avatar

@masukomi @actuallyautistic For me this problem almost always starts at the very beginning of any form. Fot this example, let's assume my name is John Mastodon.

Form: Please fill in your name
Me: John
Form: Please fill in your first name
Me: ...

vees ,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@masukomi @actuallyautistic Having designed some of these forms, a lot of times the terribleness comes from the fact that they need to be resistant to being overturned by a court if an applicant is unhappy with the process. Injecting simpler language often conflicts with having to stick to language that's actually in statute.

Jobob ,
@Jobob@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@vees @masukomi @actuallyautistic I mean I see what you're getting at, but that's literally the first time I've ever seen anyone suggest that ambiguity would be /beneficial/ in a legal process of any kind...

vees ,
@vees@epistolary.org avatar

@Jobob @masukomi @actuallyautistic I’m saying, it may be confusing in a plain reading, but is unambiguous in relation to the statute text.

Yuki ,

@masukomi @actuallyautistic it's the kind of cryptic bureaucracy stuff someone who usually fill these forms on a regular basis have to tell you what they want, even for allistic people

the thing is that autistic people don't have the energy to try to find this out for literally everything in life

masukomi OP ,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@Yuki @actuallyautistic yes, and no. There have been so many forms that I have struggled with that my allistic wife has been able to patiently explain what I needed to enter in the field without any real difficulty.

of course, part of the problem is that my brain gets wrapped up in indignant rage at the mind-numbing idiocy and falsehoods that are been forced upon me.

“That’s not what that means! If i answer what they asked i’ll be screwed, but that can’t possibly be what is intended!!!” Etc.

Better: Every form that is created has to pass the Council of Autistic & ADHD People.
And of course it only passes after the form makes sense.
