taladar , to Fediverse in The Trouble with Forking Mastodon

I don't really see the point in forking a project like Mastodon unless you are already deeply involved with its development. It doesn't do enough that you couldn't rewrite it better (as in in a way you understand better and with lessons from the original taken into account) in the time it would take you to fully understand all the details of the existing code base.

Mastodon lacks a lot of basic features, like full text search.

deadsuperhero OP Mod ,
@deadsuperhero@lemmy.ml avatar

It actually does have that nowadays, it's just that the feature requires Elasticsearch to work, which is one extra piece of infra for admins to worry about.

taladar ,

It is about as common as using a database server for content though to use something like ES, Solr or similar software for search.

dnzm ,
@dnzm@feddit.nl avatar

It absolutely is. Yet, as Sean said, it's also yet another bit of software to run and maintain, and ES is known to be a bit of an effort to keep going well.

Admins having only finite amounts of time and/or resources, might make the very understandable decision to leave it out.

@maegul@lemmy.ml avatar

Yea agreed. It’s not the forking that matters though IMO, it’s the commitment to a true and stable alternative, whatever the best way to that is.

Nostr is awesome. I'm hoping it grows much further.

I remember I used to worry about latency with these but then I found out how bad YouTube streams are

jonasw , to Fediverse in Mastodon Incorporates as a Non-Profit in the US

Mastodon’s CTO, Renaud Chaput, offered this clarifying comment on Hacker News:

Our operating structure is still the Germany-based Mastodon gGmbH. The new US non-profit is here to facilitate fundraising in the US and promote Mastodon there (plus maybe one day pay developers directly, if we hire in the US).

cbarrick , to Fediverse in Mastodon Incorporates as a Non-Profit in the US

The EU is terrible at maintaining good tech companies.

Like, they have some really important and innovative consumer protection regulations, but they are really shooting themselves in the foot with this one...

rettetdemdativ ,

I don't see how this is the EU's fault. This is some German tax office revoking a status they had previously granted without any explanation. It seems typical for German bureaucracy though.

I have been working on a personal Ghost blog and this is amazing news for me!! Ghost is a joy to use. I am curious about the performance requirements, how it will work with self hosted, I have mine on a cheap VPS.

Am I misunderstanding, or is ActivityPub just reinventing RSS?

ranandtoldthat ,

Activity Pub is much more flexible, the tradeoff being that it's more complex. ActivityPub is basically a flexible CRUD API specifically designed for social networking, with support for federation.

You could fulfill the purpose of RSS with ActivityPub. But, it doesn't supercede RSS/atom, because the simplicity is valuable for the cases those protocols handle.

Had the same thought a few days ago when I discovered Podcast worked with RSS and that you could get Podcast and News technically in one place

Awesome, I'm not sure what substacks is but ghost is pretty cool and I like to federate

Substack is just another platform where the nazis run wild thanks to capitalism or misguided ideas of what free speech is supposed to mean.

Adding to the Nazi comment - substack is basically a long form blog format, very similar (AFAICT) to Medium.

Any relation to the WordPress competitor Ghost or are there two blog platforms called Ghost

deadsuperhero OP ,

It's the WordPress competitor.

The idea to prompt people who want to subscribe to a publication with "enter your email or ActivityPub address" is great

warmaster ,

Electronic Mail, then we got e-mail, now it's just email. I wonder if calling ActivityPub something else would help with better recognition.

Apub maybe?

roguetrick , to Fediverse in You Can Now Follow President Biden on the Fediverse

I'm surprised the white house doesn't just host a mastodon server. I'm sure they consider using unvetted software to communicate to be a security risk, but it's no less a risk to put your communication channels in the hands of a third party.

I'd actually love to see something like this happen, as it seems to be something European governments and officials are embracing. To have something similar for the United States would be incredible.

I think at the moment, there's a real need for advocates, consultants, and vendors that can actually cater to government entities here. I would imagine there's probably some crazy data requirements needed for US Government Officials.

I had the chance to ask the responsible person of the EU commission about this at the last CCC congress and sadly he was much less optimistic. The answer basically boilded down to: as long as someone else funds and maintains it they are willing to put an intern or similar at work to post updates, but currently all these efforts are time limited and when funding for the 3rd party to operate them runs out, these efforts are likely to die off quickly. The actual buy in and willingness to operate their own social media infrastructure seems to be very low.
