I disagree, you can see so much on the old layout specifically because it's a wall of text. The new layout is unnecessarily bloated and takes up your whole screen on every device you view it from, so you can barely see more than one or two posts at a time. It removes the ability for the user to freely scroll and look at things that interest them, and forces the user's attention onto exactly what the algorithm wants them to. The new layout removes a ton of agency from the user.
I think for two simply have different use cases for Reddit.
The old ui is great if you see Reddit as a text aggregator. You want text or headlines and click on the content to see it. Images are almost meaningless.
The new ui puts a focus on visual connect. Images and videos are the focus, you don't have to follow links most of the time, because the content is embedded.
Those are two very different approaches. Neither is doing a great job of achieving their goals, though.
The problem with the word woke is that it was specifically about racial inequality and then the right made it synonymous with everything they hate about lgbtq people. White Christian Nationalism is the real mind virus.
No, we think woke is hysterical because no right wingers know what it means. I'll happily call myself woke, but I also use it as a sarcastic pejorative
Wasn't there a study that found if you tell people you're working on something, you get the same brain reward chemicals as if you actually did it and told everyone? So if you tell people before you're done, you might just go "meh, I'm good, the rest sounds hard". Or something like that.
I'm vegetarian. Western food is so focused on meat that people often have no idea how to make a meal that doesn't contain it. My mother once asked me how to make a vegetarian version of Chicken Parmesan. So keep the tomato sauce, cheese, and spices, but swap out the chicken with pasta. Congrats you've made vegetarian Chicken Parmesan. I like to call it Spaghetti.
and people get so pissy about like 'where is muh serving of protein??' like just because you saw an infograph as a child doesn't mean you have to have a hunk of a living creature every meal
You know what has protein? Every whole plant food. You don't need a dedicated part of a meal that is high in protein when the whole meal contains protein.
And there’s a lot of alternatives for many different prices. I remember how people used to berate me for being vegetarian while growing up, telling me I’d die and whatnot.
If more than one entity massacred people, it means massacre is okay? Very strange logic. Do bad things have to be done by only one entity to be considered bad?
I am proud of Lemmy.ml for defederating. The second I find out if kbin social or lemmy world defederate or not I will just move to the other one since I use both.
(Edit turns out Lemmy.ml is run by Tankies and also allows federation with lemmygrad.)
Nuh-uh. Organic/long established ethnostates may be frowned upon, but if they close off their borders to preserve their identity, that's their right,
since I belive in the self-determination of peoples.
It is arguable though, whether these even exist right now, or are there only nation-states and some wannabe ethnostates.
Trying to violently establish an ethnostate is of course something I cannot agree with.
close off their borders to preserve their identity
If your ethnicity is your identity, you're by definition a xenophobic bigot.
since I belive in the self-determination of peoples.
Except for people who want to move to the ethnostates you support, of course 🙄
Trying to violently establish an ethnostate is of course something I cannot agree with.
You literally can't establish and maintain an ethnostate without the use of a lot of violence and oppression against people of other ethnicities. That's just how the world works.
Ethnicity totally can be part of an identity, but that doesn't mean you have to hate anyone.
Don't misunderstand "closing off borders". Making the people stay is not okay. Not letting the people that left back is also not okay. Not letting in a different ethnicity? Arguably racist, but I wouldn't count not letting them into your country as oppression. I'm a christian, so I can't visit Mecca, yet I don't feel oppressed.
That's why I said "long established" and that's why I pointed out that those aren't many. I don't think the violence you'd have to use to establish an ethnostate is in any way acceptable. If the ethnostate already stands though, you may use certain tools to preserve it, which are not many and are usually "not enough".
My take wasn't that ethnostates are good, but that they are not inherently bad either, it's just the tools usually used to establish and preserve them that we must condemn.
Dunno about China but surely AKs being the small arms of choice for many countries, rebles, freedom fighters, terrorists and partisans of every flavour must put Kalashnikov Concern pretty high up there.
Did you want me to say Norinco? They only have a license to make AKs but I don't think that should count or it gets real hard to calculate what arms company did what.
I mean it's a pretty academic question. Do the merchants of war drive global conflict, or are they necessary for national defense? Or is the issue more nuanced?
Russia historically makes up about half the world's arms trade. Though that has declined in recent years due to Ukraine. So who is the chicken and who is the egg?
Fwiw, I tend to agree that arms manufacturers do play a role in driving global conflict, but it's also clearly A responding to B and B responding to A.
This has also changed significantly since 2022 since Russia has effectively stopped exporting weapons. They used to be pretty close to the US in terms of total exports
