palordrolap , to Moving to: m/AskMbin! in Do you ever go back and reread your own posts and find yourself wondering how the hell you managed to say the words that you said?

"I'm a million different people from one day to the next; I can't change my mould, no no." — Bittersweet Symphony

We all show rotating aspects of ourselves, but we remain fundamentally the same. Unless something drastic happens that changes how those aspects present or function anyway.

(Maybe that lyric doesn't mean what I'm reading into it, but it's what I've taken from it. That's a funny thing about art.)

So yeah, I've looked back through comments I've made and realised that I knew something at the time that I'd since forgotten, and seen how smart I'd been - or how utterly cringe-inducing, and known that at some point, that if the cringe is bound to return, so might the smart. Hopefully. Maybe. Please.

There's also the fact that we distil ourselves down for a comment. Present the best side, or the best of the aspect we're going for. Even trolls do this. Unfortunately. So when we look back, not at all in the same frame of mind that we were at the time, it's like looking at the highlights of someone else's life on some other social media, not seeing everything else that's going on besides.

I probably won't remember all the edits and corrections I've made to this comment before submitting the first time. Only time knows how future me will perceive it, should I ever look back.

shazbot , to /kbin meta in Could blocked magazines no longer appear in Random Post and Random Thread sidebars?

A few suggestions that may or may not be satisfactory for you:

Using KES, enable General > Hide sidebar elements > Random threads, Random mags, Random posts. The randomly populated sidebar is fundamentally flawed; I suggest disabling its content altogether.

Next, enable General > Filter advertisements. This second feature is by no means foolproof, but will reduce a lot of noise, and is periodically updated on a rolling basis.

@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

The guy that manages Kbin has been having personal issues and stepped away from the fediverse so yeah Kbin is kind of in limbo at the moment and indeed not well moderated. There's mods but there's just so much they can do. The software doesn't federate the deletions so even if they're gone on Kbin, they remain everywhere else.

palordrolap ,

One of the main problems is that Ernest is the owner and only mod on those magazines getting all the spam. I guess I missed the memo (figuratively speaking) about deletions not being federated though. That seems like a problem even if there were alternative moderators.

There's at least one person on the mod-request queue for most of the spam-ridden magazines. That "at least one" is me, which is how I know. I'm not here all the time and wouldn't be great at it, but at this stage even a part-time mod would be better than none at all. Hopefully, as and when Ernest comes back he can assign some roles. Twice as hopefully, someone else who would be better at it gets it instead.

That's a shame - kbin had some cool ideas.

I hope it goes on. And being open source, it definitely will! (e.g. Mbin)

Ernest likewise will be remembered, fondly or otherwise, for his contributions in starting it.

That said, I'm close to personally blocking it due to all the spam hitting other servers from it, and the FBI may come knocking soon as well if people decide to hit it with illegal stuff like CP.

I really like KBin! I wish Ernest the best with his health, and hope development of the project will continue in the future. In the meantime I have created this new account on fedia.io and will be exploring mbin!

I've moved to fedia.io (mbin)

kbin.social is always down, always spitting our errors/etc.

I am not sure if this has been posted here, but @ernest posted this on codeberg a couple weeks ago.

”I have been away from home for a long time now and do not have all accesses. I will try to restore access in the coming days. The care of the instance will also be handed over.”

I sincerely hope Ernest is able to get back on his feet; his health hasn’t been good since the beginning of the year. Kbin is a great concept.

I moved to lemme.ee because Kbin.social was down. Sort of a bummer...

I only look into kbin.social occasionally to see if they finally got their spam problem under control. They were nice maybe a year ago, but now it is a dumpster fire with half the main page being ads for drugs and junk services.

I gave up on kbin social months ago when it went down with no idea when it would be working again. I ended up going over to lemmy.world.

Same…

I am still hoping that Ernest is able to recover and get back on his feet. I did really like how Kbin was able to interface with Mastodon and Lemmy.

Ernest did respond a couple weeks ago on codeberg. Looks like he plans to hand the instance over for new management. I have no idea when exactly that will happen.

I have been on kbin.run (kinda confusing name lol) for awhile now because of the instability of of .social and the added functionality of mbin. For some reason .run's certificate doesn't work with my home computer's browser (Waterfox) so I made a fedia.io account as well.

I'm satisfied with the mobile web interface for m/kbin so I don't feel a need for a dedicated app.

kbin.run admin here, i'm curious if this cert problem is still happening as i recently loosened up some of my super strict bot killing mechanisms... give it a shot again and DM me if it still doesn't work so i can try to figure out what's going on.

as for the name... yea, i should have named it something different. at the time, kbin was the only horse in town and the intent was to help alleviate some traffic from .social before the foundation took over to run it on their cluster... then things fell apart. unfortunately, i can't rehome it to a new domain because it will break federation of all existing content, accounts, etc.

RandomStickman ,
@RandomStickman@kbin.run avatar

Thanks for you hard work! I'll give it a try when I'm home (if I remember to do so lol). The naming makes sense at the time I suppose
