Meta:

"Ok everyone has forgotten about this, now let's get that election money!"

Don't just sign a petition.

Delete your facebook and instagram.

ohlaph ,

I did that 8 or 9 years ago, before it was cool.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

Nice!

I did not, though my facebook is deleted now. I just got sick of how it was making me miserable every time I opened it, so a year ago I nuked it.

I still have an instagram for my business, but once I have Cara up and running, I'm going to delete all the content there as well.

QuizzaciousOtter ,

Finally did it a few months back. I'm slowly degoogling too, although I'm afraid I won't be ready to cut all ties for a bit more time.

It's really sad that tech ended up like this. It all seemed so exciting not that long ago.

half ,

Amen and I think you're preaching to the choir on that one lol

If they are capable of taking this decision during such an important time, why would an internet petition change their views? The only way to have them do it is regulation that will hurt their turnover if they don't comply.

djsaskdja , to Technology in Petition | Meta has announced it will be abandoning CrowdTangle, its industry leading transparency tool, this August - in the middle of the biggest election year on record

In what way is this year the biggest election year on record? It’s literally the exact same candidates as it was 4 years ago.

TheUnicornOfPerfidy ,

There are other countries in the world that have elections apart from the US. More of them than ever before in one year are having them in 2024.

FlashMobOfOne ,
@FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world avatar

They say that every election year.

TimLovesTech ,
@TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social avatar

I know I'm feeding a troll, but US democracy is on the ballot this year. Previous years have been big years, but this could be the last election in the US. Trump getting to the White House will allow him to save himself, and he will be bringing Fascism to a whole new level in the US with Project 2025 and all the truly evil folks in his cult leadership circle.

djsaskdja ,

They say this every 4 years and nothing really changes.

Zannsolo ,

I mean one of the candidates is a convicted felon that worships dictators and has said he will go after political rivals and that he'd be a dictator for a day.

djsaskdja ,

He said he’d build a wall and Mexico would pay for it and that never happened either. Trump says a lot of stupid shit. It’s weird that he’s taken so seriously.

TimLovesTech ,
@TimLovesTech@badatbeing.social avatar

He's shown you who he is, I think we need to start believing him. He has also surrounded himself with even more unhinged and dangerous people this time around. They have a plan this time to keep power and end elections. Putting your head in the sand doesn't make him and his cult any less of a threat, and plays right into their playbook. They want you to become disengaged, to burn out, to think he is "just joking", or just "telling it how he sees it", or worst of all "the new normal". These all leave his cult emboldened and with less resistance to grabbing power.

djsaskdja ,

It’s not like if Trump loses his supporters suddenly go away. These people will be right back here in 2028 trying the same shit. Hyping up every election like we’re on knife’s edge is so disingenuous. Especially when the opposing candidates are completely out of touch ghouls like Clinton and Biden. Personally I’m content to sit back and watch it all burn. We’re headed down a shit trajectory no matter who’s in office. There’s no hope for a good future unless we burn it all down anyway.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres ,

It’s not just America having an election this year. India just had theirs and it’s the biggest election on Earth.

What a stain on humanity Zuckerberg has been.

He took advantage of the Myspace potential and has gone almost unchallenged and unchecked. He needs to pay for his crimes.

Meta abandoning CrowdTangle during an election year has the same vibe as an officer turning off a body camera right before a confrontation.

What a surprise, the company that has been proven to sway the course of elections for profit might well do it again!

Tbh, maybe someone should try making an open-source dating app.

You know what, being a dev myself that's something I'll try as a hobby project. We'll see how it work out.

pennomi ,

Honestly, dating apps are one of the cases for a federated system. Use whatever frontend you want, no one person owns the backend so they can’t sleazily monetize you. Probably would need to be a bit more cryptographic than something like lemmy or mastodon though.

For me, she is starting from these pieces of information ... she's a Yale law school alumni. Do with that what you will.

bionicjoey ,

That tells me literally nothing.

whereisk , (edited ) to Technology in Nabiha Syed will join the Mozilla Foundation as [their] next Executive Director

I hope she's great, but I can't imagine you'll find more dedicated or more aligned to the cause people than those that have spent a lifetime working to build everything that is Mozilla.

I can't imagine they can't find good people from within - why do you need to inject people from outside right at the top of the foundation?

____ ,

Executive Dir for an org that size is not an easy position to fill. Not that there isn’t a qualified JD within the org, but it also take personality and passion.

I’m going to err on the side of presuming there was an internal search, for now. If I’m later proven wrong, so be it.

rottingleaf , to Technology in Nabiha Syed will join the Mozilla Foundation as [their] next Executive Director

I started my career as a media lawyer to protect those who made things that helped us see one another, and the truth about our shared world.

This ... can be interpreted in a few ways, some suicidal for one's reputation.

snownyte ,
@snownyte@kbin.social avatar

My immediate interpretation was "...did she get involved in some copyright lawsuits against pirates?". The answer is inconclusive because I couldn't find any search results that had her name plastered or referenced in any copyright/pirate cases.

However I did discover that she's the CEO of another company called the Markup, which basically is just a nonprofit newsroom that fact-checks some reports. So I suppose she's just someone who studies law on media to get a better understanding if I'm reading into that, but it's such a vague term to use if you're not like a practicing lawyer that specializes in media like copyright. I don't know, she failed to post any credentials other than declaring a position.

rottingleaf ,

Yes, meant copyright

I'm not reading all that. I just need one answer from any suit at Mozilla: are you going to sell us out or not.

Kecessa ,

"Are you going to stop the"so called AI" bullshit?" more like

TheGrandNagus , (edited )

Tbf if you actually look into Mozilla's "AI" plans, it's for stuff like better offline translation, better screen reader and image description functionality for disabled users, finding alternate sources for articles, and so on.

It all runs locally, is trained on open source models with ethically sourced training data, and doesn't send your personal information to Mozilla.

I don't think it should be treated in the same way as Google or Microsoft's AI implementations. People should actually look into things before they assume they know everything.

snownyte ,
@snownyte@kbin.social avatar

Yeah but they also use the word 'commercialize' which could very well mean that they're looking to get something out from this. How much and who's profiting is what we don't know yet but it is a concern.

snownyte , to Technology in Nabiha Syed will join the Mozilla Foundation as [their] next Executive Director
@snownyte@kbin.social avatar

I don't care whether or not she connects with an audience. You can communicate with the audience all you want.

What matters is whether or not she's actually going to mean anything, instead of playing cute for people.

dan42O ,

Her email is right at the bottom.

Nice

There’s an important corollary to all this. I (and we at Mozilla) don’t have all the good ideas. We never will. So, consider my inbox to be yours. Got an idea? Let’s talk: [email protected]

wagoner ,

I mean, what are you really asking? For her to do something? It's an announcement posting for a new position she has started, setting out who she is for people. So negative.
