How bout let us opt into this stupid bullshit instead of handing us a barely functional piece of software

Microplasticbrain , to Technology in YouTube's next move might make it virtually impossible to block ads

Over the past years I've been reducing my youtube and twitch viewership anyways. Its literally the lowest form of entertainment and its not worth a single moment of ad watching. I'll just do something else. Most youtube content sucks anyways. I don't even remember most of the channels I used to watch.

They're just going to increase their own server costs chasing some tiny fraction of viewers who will do anything to avoid ads. they should be grateful for the adviewers they have.

rwhitisissle ,

Man, you're definitely spot on with this. For me, it's a fast, easy source of superficial distraction that I can put on for background noise and don't have to pay attention to. It's ultimately what cable TV used to be for me. I'll even leave on a streamer playing a game in the background on low volume if I'm going to sleep just for white noise. At this point, the behavior and desire for that kind of content is so ingrained in me that it's sort of like an addiction. I wish there were alternatives to youtube, but that era of video content might just be straight up dying for some of us. I guess if anything I'll start fleshing out my plex server with old t.v. shows and just put Gilligan's Island or something on in the background.

Microplasticbrain ,

Yea, a plex server for idle viewing would be a way better alternative. Just make a custom nickelodeon, comedy central, etc and have it run random episodes of random shows.

Misk ,

I've actually always wanted to do this! Download a load of old school Nickelodeon stabs and episodes and find some software that can play them all together in random order haha... Any advice on how to go about setting this up?

rwhitisissle ,

It's actually built into plex. If you have a library of t.v. shows you can just click the Shuffle button and it'll play random episodes. Or you can make Categories of shows and shuffle those. If you're asking how to get started with Plex and downloading content, well....I don't want to get banned for piracy related reasons, so I'll just say that, totally unrelated to this discussion, there's a wealth of resources regarding how to get started with bittorrent and usenet. Which you can use for perfectly legal purposes, like downloading Liinux ISOs and open source textbooks.

Misk ,

Nah I'm good for Linux ISOs and open source textbooks, just wasn't aware that some of these media players had a shuffle button 😝 thanks folks!

I thought the Apple network and the new Android network work together? Meaning it just work just as well as an apple tag

I just want replaceable batteries on my phones again. The last two Samsung phones I owned ended up with swollen batteries, requiring sending them back to Samsung for repairs. I really miss the days of just being able to pop the back off and buying a replacement battery.

mindbleach , to Android in It's time to stop thinking plastic phones can't be premium

Only fashion victims thought that.

Companies happily obliged them, bumping the price of phones that break much more easily.

tl;dr? Article is too long.

Apple network is not super reliable either. I've seen videos of people using them in crowded cities and you'll only ever get a ping every couple of hours.

I certainly would prefer a plastic backing than a glass one. Why the fuck does every phone have to be encased entirely in glass? It breaks and it's slippery as fuck, making it more prone to slip out of your hand and break. It's so ubiquitous and universally fucking stupid that I am convinced it's purposely designed so you will drop and break it so you have to pay to fix or replace it.

Every heavy duty aftermarket phone case is mostly plastic and rubberized silicone. Because that shit is 1000 times more durable and shock resistant than glass. Glass's great only for being scratch resistant. There's no reason that every phone couldn't have an otter box-like outer shell built in.

Flax_vert ,

It is actually better for durability if the outer shell is removable as well. Eg, having a durable phone case on a midrange phone is better than a rugged phone. Simply being as you can easily swap the case

I'm going off of hearsay here from a video I saw years ago, but it was comparing a decently durable android in a rugged case with a purpose built rugged android phone. Both sustained similar damage but at least the one with the case could be fixed by a case swap. Other one would need a full on repair.

Time to set connect to open all urls in Firefox.

What do you mean; is "connect" some sort of URL-filtering service?

It's a really nice Lemmy app. Open source as well iirc.

Dymonika ,

Interesting. Can you comment/post using it, though? The description makes it out to be just a reader app.

Scary_le_Poo ,
@Scary_le_Poo@beehaw.org avatar

Yes, it's fully featured. No bugs that I am aware of.

Dymonika ,

I can't find anything about this actually being open-source, so I'm inclined to stick to Boost for Lemmy by Mayayo...

So it sounds like Google went for more privacy than expected, making the trackers less useful, but making it less likely to reveal other people's location.

cbarrick ,

The article says all phones Android 9 and up are in on the network.

But I was under the impression that enrollment in the network was still rolling out? Anyone have details on the current state?

To me, this just sounds like the network isn't rolled out fully yet (or that NYC residents don't use Android, which seems suspect) rather than a failing of the device itself.

I find the cheap phones are often the "premium" ones.

Those are the ones with plastic backs, headphone jacks, multiple SIMs, smaller size, lighter weight, good physical fingerprint readers, etc.

Mango , to Android in It's time to stop thinking plastic phones can't be premium

It's time to stop deciding what other people should like.

Oddbin , to Android in It's time to stop thinking plastic phones can't be premium

If it's ones use and out plastic, I'll stick with glass and metal. I know someone is about to say they still cause CO2 and they do, but these materials can at least be easily recycled. This means when the rest of the chain becomes green (for lack of a better phrase) then so will this part.

If however it's using fully reusable and fully recyclable (not just incinerator "recycling") then sure, absolutely no issue. Fully behind it. I'm willing to bet, however, all of the money in my pocket that that's not the case here though sadly.

Twitches ,

I don't think gorilla glass is recyclable however you could use recycled plastics.

Oddbin ,

If not now, soon.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66359047

As for recycled plastics, I mean, yes? That's kind of the goal. Fully recyclable devices is my desire, regardless of material. Right now, plastic isn't for the vast, vast majority.

oxideseven , to Android in It's time to stop thinking plastic phones can't be premium

I've been saying this for years. Use nice textured recycled plastic. The amount of cool textured and nice feeling materials out there is insane.

Gimme a plastic screen too. If someone is concerned about scratches they can add a glass protector. Those people already do anyway. There are even plastics that could be used that would resist scratches incredibly well.

Then my whole phone is flexible and nearly unbreakable.

Doom ,

Bro just make it yourself you probably have enough plastic in your body for it

jcarax ,

I'd give my left nut for a premium plastic phone...
